New York Public Interest Research Group (NYPIRG)
NYPIRG is a statewide, non-partisan, non-profit advocacy organization established
and directed by college students from across the state. Principal areas of
concern are students' rights, environmental preservation, consumer rights,
hunger, homelessness, small claims court counseling, higher education funding
and voting reform.
Volunteers choose one area or issue on which to concentrate. Most of the
work is done on campus.
Duties may include: running meetings; organizing educational forums and debates;
speaking to classes, student and community groups; organizing letter writing,
phone call and petition drives; working with local media; doing researth;
and, lobbying legislators.
All majors are welcome to apply but the opportunity might be most helpful
to undergraduates in political science,
social welfare and sociology
