In March 2007, UAlbany's New York State Writers Institute announced a new partnership with Fence Magazine Inc., which publishes Fence, a biannual journal of poetry, fiction, criticism, and art, and Fence Books, the book press. Fence publishes challenging writing distinguished by idiosyncrasy and intelligence. The 18th issue of Fence also marks the beginning of what is to be an ongoing collaboration between the University at Albany Art Museum and Fence Magazine Inc.
The non-profit organization has been associated with some of the literary universe's brightest stars, including past and present editors and advisory board members Lynne Tillman, Matthew Rohrer, Jonathan Lethem, Ben Marcus, Anne Carson, Annie Dillard, Jonathan Galassi, Rick Moody, Brenda Hillman, and Peter Straub.
Fence editor Rebecca Wolff is a prize-winning poet; her first book received the National Poetry Series award and her second garnered the Barnard Women Poets Prize.
