UAlbany Student Writes About Her Experience Taking Gothic Art and Architecture Course
Zaina Siraj, a senior UAlbany student majoring in Human Biology and minoring in Public Health and History, contributed an article in the Material Collective, titled HIStory not MYstory, about her experience taking Gothic Art and Architecture in Fall 2019. Zaina is applying to medical school with the hopes of becoming a physician, and is also an active digital artist.
MA and MFA Thesis Shows Go Virtual in 2020
Two exhibitions of exceptional work by UAlbany graduate candidates are presented in virtual formats from May 1-May 17, 2020. Efflorescence, the 2020 MA Thesis Show, featuring work by Bob DiBono, Juliana Haliti, Tara Holmes, Raouf Khalil, Andrea Lawyer, Minling Lin, and H.C.Tiffany Lo, is viewable as a catalogue here.
UAlbany Master of Arts Thesis Show Efflorescence Adapts to the Temporary Shift of the Art World Online

The University at Albany Department of Art & Art History opens its 2020 MA Thesis Show Efflorescence on May 1st. Efflorescence – meaning “flowering out" in French – features paintings, sculpture, and photography by MA candidates Bob DiBono, Juliana Haliti, Tara Holmes, Raouf Khalil, Andrea Lawyer, Minling Lin, and H.C.Tiffany Lo. The exhibition is presented as an online catalogue until May 17th, 2020. It represents the culmination of one year of intensive study and studio art practice. Since March 23, the students have been working off campus, adapting basements, living rooms, offices, and garages into home studios.
JoAnne Carson: Rise Up and Shine! at Opalka Gallery
The Opalka Gallery in Albany is currently exhibiting a twenty-five year survey of the work of University at Albany studio art professor JoAnne Carson. There will be a reception on Friday, February 7, from 6-8 p.m., with an artist's tour at 5 p.m. There will also be an artist's lecture on Tuesday, February 18 at 6:30 p.m.
Art History Professor Michael Werner Receives International Award
On December 10, 2019, the City of Sremska Mitrovica in Serbia awarded Professor Michael Werner of the Art and Art History Department at the University at Albany the “Plaque of Honor for his many years of contribution to research on, presentation and promotion of the Roman legacy of Sirmium and the cultural heritage of the City of Sremska Mitrovica,” in particular the Roman Imperial Palace on this ancient site. During the years that Professor Werner was engaged in this international work, several University at Albany Art History majors pursued summer internships at the site, preserving ancient Roman mosaics.
Boor Sculpture Studio's Bisbing featured in Utica Art Show
Roger Bisbing, Instructional Support Technician for the Boor Sculpture Studio at UAlbany, is featured in a two-person show at the Munson Williams Proctor Institute’s PrattMWP Gallery in Utica, NY. The show runs from November 8 - December 5, 2019 and is free and open to the public. More information can be found on the PrattMWP Gallery website.
Art Professor JoAnne Carson Featured in Vermont Exhibition
University at Albany Professor of Studio Art JoAnne Carson recently exhibited her work in Contemporary American Regionalism: Vermont Perspectives, a group art show in Manchester, Vermont, August through October 2019.
