Milne Alumni November Newsletter
November 15, 2006
(Revised for Web publication.)

by Mary Welch, '71

Dear Classmates & Milne Alumni,

As we just passed the observance of Veterans Day on November 11th, I would like to include in this newsletter the names of Milne Alumni who died in war while serving in the U.S. Military. I do not have all the names, but the ones that follow are from the archive material I have or, in the case of Lew Ouellette, 1969, a person I knew at Milne.

Lew is listed at the address copied below from the virtual wall website, and I have included a photo of his name on the actual wall in Washington, DC, that Ralph Benko, 1970, took earlier this summer and sent to me.

LEWIS CHARLES OUELLETTE
is honored on Panel 11W, Row 1 of
the Vietnam Veterans Memorial.
Full Name: LEWIS CHARLES OUELLETTE
Wall Name: LEWIS C OUELLETTE
Date of Birth: 5/3/1950
Date of Casualty: 4/13/1970
Home of Record: ALBANY
State: NY
Branch of Service: ARMY
Rank: SP4
Casualty Country: SOUTH VIETNAM
Casualty Province: QUANG TRI

To locate profiles of others on The Wall who share commonalities with LEWIS CHARLES OUELLETTE, click on http://www.thevirtualwall.org/.

From the Milne archive material, the following names are listed:

David Kirk, 1920
David Johnson, 1922
Jack Benjamin, 1932
Tobias Van Keuren, 1937
Jack Beagle, 1938
Edgar Harding, 1938
Dick Selkirk, 1938
Bob Bingham, 1940
Armon Livermore, 1940
Bob Stevenson, 1940
Bob Barden, 1941
James Haskins, 1942
Louis Austin, 1944

This list is very likely incomplete, but if you have alumni names and their class years you can add to it, please let me know. I would like to have all these military service individuals honored with a plaque at some point and perhaps have it placed in the back of Page Hall.

I receive obituary notices from time to time of alumni and faculty, and I send them out to those on this newsletter list. If you come across a notice that you think others would like to see, please pass it on to me.

Judy Koblintz Madnick, 1961, a dual Milne/SUNYA graduate, recently sent me this information:

"The following UAlbany faculty members were listed as deceased in a recent UAlbany Magazine:
* Eleanor Brown, Instructor, Milne School, 1970-73, July 4, 2006
* Mabel Jackman, Professor, School of Education, 1942-69, Feb. 15, 2006 (Milne Librarian)
* Harriet Norton, Professor, Educational Theory and Practice, 1953-77, Feb. 20, 2006 (Milne Latin supervisor)"

Our Milne Alumni database is in progress and Judy, who is creating it, has been checking class information with class contacts. If you are interested in the status of your class-year information, please contact her using this link: Judy. This nonpublished database will be able to be sorted alphabetically, by class year, and by ZIP codes. She has already done a remarkable job with what I have seen. We are always looking for missing classmates and contact information, especially e-mail addresses.

We hope to have the database completed for use in letting everyone know about the Milne Reunion Luncheon next June 2nd on the Milne Campus. If you want more information on this, please go to Luncheon. Judy has made some updates on the website in the past month, if you haven't taken a look at it in a while.

We are planning to add photos to the website at some time, so if you have interesting Milne Alumni photos, send them to Judy. (Note: Due to space restrictions, it's best to provide a link to photographs posted elsewhere on the Web.)

Milne Class Reunions this coming year will be:

1937 (70th)
1942 (65th)
1947 (60th)
1952 (55th)
1957 (50th)*
1962 (45th)
1967 (40th)**
1972 (35th)
1977 (30th)

*I know that the Class of 1967 is working on their reunion and Artie Cohen is the person to contact for more information.

**I also know that the Class of 1957 is having a reunion and Dan Brown is planning it.

If your class year is planning a reunion this coming year, please let me know.

Thank you for writing and keeping in touch.

I hope you all have a Happy Thanksgiving.

Best wishes,

Mary Welch, '71
