GOOD NEWS: ALAN MARKOWITZ, M.D., '61

Alan Markowitz, M.D., a member of the Class of '61, received the Dolly Haugh Chair in Valvular Heart Surgery in 2008 at University Hospitals of Cleveland (UH). In addition, the Alan Markowitz Chair in Cardiac and Vascular Surgery was endowed in 2017. As the principal surgical investigator for the Intrepid Trial at UH, he and his colleagues performed the first catheter replacement of the mitral valve in the state of Ohio and, in a second patient with an old worn-out valve repair, the first in the world. Alan made the 2018 Ohio “Best Doc’s” List for cardiac surgery (and for the last 20 years!).

More importantly, according to Alan, he and his wife have three granddaughters, ages 6, 7, and 16, with whom they have been able to hike and ski at their house in Colorado just west of Vail. Alan and his wife have an active involvement with the Cleveland Orchestra, periodically join them for their European tours, and will likely meet them in China next year. Alan has no retirement plans just yet (for which we should be very thankful!). Congratulations, Alan, for your many very significant accomplishments
