Dear Milne Alumni and Supporters,

In this issue:

* Good News From Alumni

GOOD NEWS FROM ALUMNI!

Please let me know if you would like your name to become an email link when you send Good News...so that other alumni are able to contact you.

In no particular order:

From Richard Propp, '52: There will be a Milne Class of 1952 lunch at the Orchard Taven & Restaurant, 68 N. Manning Boulevard, Albany, at noon Thursday May 18, 2017. Contact Richard Propp at (518) 482-0420 for further information.

From Mary Mapes Phillips, '46: Barbara Smith Vosburgh, '46, Dick Herrick, '46, and Mary Mapes Phillips, '46, along with Mary's daughter, Barbara Long, recently met for lunch in Albany. They enjoyed getting together after several years. Barbara and Dick are still driving, but Mary had to stop because of vision problems. The hearing is slipping but the mouths still work fine!

From John Garman, '58: To celebrate his 76th birthday, he flew to Moscow, Russia and boarded the Trans Siberian Express train, crossing the remainder of the European continent, entering the Asian continent (Siberia), and then dropping down through Mongolia, entering northern China and arriving in Beijing two and one-half weeks later.

John also said that in April 2017, Harold Chambers, '58, and his wife Helen visited John and his wife Nancy in Durham, North Carolina. They had a marvelous visit and discussed possibilities of another Class of 1958 reunion, hopefully at an exotic place other than at some fancy nursing home! NOW, WHAT'S NEW WITH YOU ALL!

From Arleen Blackstone, '57:

"Just completed a fantastic 13-week, 39-hour program with the Okaloosa Sheriff's Citizens Academy teaching about the services provided by our nearly 500 County Sheriffs, a national award-winning team.

"A School Resource Officer program has volunteer deputies in schools to assure safety and to be a visible symbol of a friend and mentor. The Explorer Program puts volunteer deputies in high schools to develop interest in possible law-enforcement careers. Volunteer posses and mounted posses (pooper scoopers) serve for parades, rodeos, festivals, and other public events.

"We learned about field training, accreditation, recruiting, internal affairs, DUI and traffic enforcement, narcotics, crime analysis/forensics, fugitive warrants, civil process, records, warrants and the judicial process, street crimes, major crimes, property crimes, crime scene (CSI and body recovery), child abuse, search and seizure, the Dive Team and Beach/marine patrol, Intel, Domestic security, and human trafficking. Public information releases the news on wanted persons or emergencies. Crime Stoppers (850-863-TIPS) takes anonymous tips by phone on wanted persons or a crime in progress.

"Tours and hands-on included a polygraph demonstration, search of vehicles for drugs, a tour of the 911 center, the courthouse, booking, display of armor (weapons), K-9, the crisis-negotiations van, special response team (SWAT)(the member carries upwards of 70 pounds of gear), a 40-pound battering ram, an armored vehicle, and a clandestine laboratory response team (destruction of meth and drug labs). The specialized team members are undercover homeless when not on team assignment.

"The most exciting events included the two 12-hour ride-alongs, one daytime and one nighttime, and the firing range with 4 out of 4 perfect hits on the paper target.

"So there you have it. Greater respect for those who keep the peace. The message: Teach others respect for the men and women in uniform and follow their requests as they serve and protect. "
