CLASS OF 1974 REUNION

The Class of 1974 is in the beginning stages of planning its 45th-year reunion. If you are interested in assisting with or attending a reunion, please contact Ellen Sax.

MUSIC FOR CLARINET & PIANO: JEROME BUNKE CLARINET, HIDEMITSU HAYASHI PIANO, WITH ELLIOT SCHWARTZ

Some of you may recall that (according to the 1963 Bricks & Ivy) among Jerry Bunke's activities at Milne, he was a solo clarinetist with the State College Band. His love of music has continued to the present.

This review of a recent CD, Music for Clarinet & Piano, appeared in The Clarinet, a publication of the International Clarinet Association:

"By opening the album with Weber’s Grand Duo Concertante, Bunke immediately showcases his even tone and technique throughout the instrument. He perfectly stitches together the shared melodic lines of this notoriously difficult work. In Souvenir, extended techniques are performed with effortless aplomb, and the piece exemplifies the modern-day importance of the composer/performer symbiosis. Baermann’s Adagio and Vaughn William’s Six Studies in English Folk Song exemplify the best of Bunke’s playing. Operatic, lyrical phrasing combined with technical seamlessness. The Sonata for Clarinet and Piano by Leonard Bernstein offers a fun, fitting finale with Bunke’s superb intonation, crisp articulations, and intense rhythmic drive. The album strikes a perfect balance between standard and cutting-edge works and would be an excellent resource for those interested in representative works from a variety of musical and stylistic periods." - Kip Franklin, International Clarinet Association
