DR. THEODORE H. FOSSIECK SCHOLARSHIP

If you, as a Milne School alumnus, alumna, or faculty member, have a direct descendant attending or planning to attend the University at Albany as an undergraduate for the upcoming school year, please contact Bill Brooking, Scholarship Coordinator, at 518-442-5478 or click here to request for information regarding an application for the Dr. Theodore H. Fossieck Scholarship.

Last year's recipient was Carl Cusack, grandson of the late Carl Eppelmann, '56.

"Established by Dr. Theodore H. Fossieck, former Principal of the Milne School and member of the Education faculty, the purpose of this fund is to provide a scholarship to a descendant of a Milne School graduate or of a Milne School faculty member.... The scholarship will be awarded to the first eligible person to apply during the application period, providing the recipient meets admissions standards."

Good luck!

GOOD NEWS!

John (Ron) Dillon, '53, recently took a trip to Ireland. "While on the flight arriving close to the Emerald Isle, watching the sunrise over the shores of Ireland, I got inspired to possibly produce a photo reportage book of the trip. I thought of a title, IRELAND People and Places. Being considered a photojournalist, the thoughts of a book of photographs became a reality...landing in this friendly country of my ancestors and being received as we were (my son Mike was with me) it was settled in my mind. I had a couple of cameras with me, a Leica and my trusty Nikon. This combo of cameras have been used over the years to produce pictures for many of the leading national newspapers and wire services. My thoughts were to portray not the glitzy tourist attractions of Ireland but to show everyday life, good, bad, or other. We traveled from Dublin to Shannon and I documented the trip as we went along. Shooting close to 1200 images, editing was a challenge. The book IRELAND People and Places is now alive and well. On Saturday, December 19, 2015, the good folks at Patrick's Pub (an Irish pub in Watervliet, NY) hosted a book signing for 'Himself Dillon.' It went well! Should anyone like to purchase a copy of the book, please email me at [email protected] or my website JRDPHOTOG.com or 'ring me up' at 518.424.9957. (The book will soon be available through the online store of SCOTTISH WOLF Celtic Gift Store - www.scottishwolf.net.)

"Sl'ainte (good health, wishes in Irish speak)."

Thanks for your good wishes, John. Your trip to Ireland, photos, and book sound wonderful!

Professor Naomi Jochnowitz, '67, was selected as the winner of the M. Gweneth Humphreys Award for Mentorship of Undergraduate Women in Mathematics to be presented at the Joint Prize Session at the Joint Mathematics Meetings in Seattle, WA, this month. This award is named for M. Gweneth Humphreys (1911-2006) and is funded by contributions from her former students and colleagues at Randolph-Macon Woman's College to recognize her commitment to and her profound influence on undergraduate students of mathematics. According to the press release, "Jochnowitz has been a teacher and mentor for over forty years, devoting herself to the development and support of undergraduate students of mathematics, in addition to her activities with math graduate students and postdocs, with a particular impact on scores of women students."

Congratulations, Naomi!

Please continue to send news, especially happy updates! Thanks to all Milne Alumni for your interest in Milne Alumni projects.
