Scope of Guide

The interdisciplinary nature of Africana Studies may require the use of multiple subjects to cover a topic comprehensively. This guide highlights broad categories and themes within Africana Studies at the University at Albany and provides examples of sources for selected topics. Relevant titles are found throughout the general collection and may be found in several call number areas. Selected reference sources on Africa and the African diaspora in the uptown Library Reference area are the primary focus of this guide. Specific focused guides like Finding and Interpreting Historical Threads and Patterns through Archival Research may also be linked here. Please also refer to other handouts from the Main Library and subject guides from other campus libraries.

This guide includes sources and collections that directly relate to Africana studies, are cross-disciplinary in nature or represent particular strengths of the collection. The focus of the guide is on key print reference sources located in the reference sections of the libraries and key indexes and electronic databases. These sources are annotated. Examples of interdisciplinary themes in Africana Studies will be found in a variety of formats, including microform, monographs, and media. These sources are primarily located at the University Libraries' uptown Main library. Relevant examples from the Science Library, and the Dewey Library are also noted. One might also consult specific subject encyclopedias, indexes, and bibliographies for coverage of topics in other subject disciplines. To access other subject related guides and internet resources, use Subject Pages & Guides.

Librarians are scheduled to assist you at the Reference Desk with source selections and search strategies. Please ask questions.

Tips for Locating Resources

Finding Books and Journal Titles in ADVANCE (ONLINE PUBLIC ACCESS CATALOG)

Materials owned by the University Libraries can be accessed through the ADVANCE or ADVANCEWeb, online local catalog by using terminals on each floor of the library or through the Internet. Use ADVANCE to locate books by author, title, subject, keywords, etc. Subjects may be searched by using either the LIBRARY OF CONGRESS SUBJECT HEADINGS (the red books near the reference desk) or by keywords. ADVANCE lists books, journal titles, reports, audiovisual materials, etc., for all three libraries: Dewey Library, the University Library and the Science Library. The notation "DEWEY" indicates materials are in the Downtown Dewey Library. Records listing "ULIB" in the call number will be found in the University Library. Resources marked "SCIENCE" are in the Science Library. ADVANCE also notes whether an item is on order or on loan (and when it is due back). If you need a book which is on loan, you may request it be returned for your use through the "recall" process. Select Request Forms on the University Libraries homepage to find out more about this or stop by the Circulation desks for assistance. The User Education department of the library provides several detailed instructional guides to assist you in the research process. Use the site index to find a listing of the many resources within this page. Please do not hesitate to ask for help or instructions at the reference desk (442-3556) when searching for information on your topics.

Finding Articles by topic

Article citations can be found in a number of print and electronic sources. For electronic indexes and abstracts or full-text sources, please use Database Finder or Subject Pages & Guides to find a specific subject database to search for articles by topic. Once you find a journal article of interest, you can go directly to ADVANCEWEB to search the title of the journal. Article titles are not listed there. For those journals that have full-text articles accessible, ADVANCEWeb now provides a direct SFX link from the journal title to the particular database that may provide either the database the article is in or a direct route to the full-text article.

Interlibrary Loan Service

If you cannot locate a resource in the the University at Albany ADVANCE (telnet version) or ADVANCEWeb Catalog, requests can be made to borrow a resource from another library. Use the ILLIAD system found on the Interlibrary Loan page to set up your account. The process of ordering from another library takes approximately 2-3 weeks (sometimes faster). Please allow for this in planning your research.

Searching for Books on Your Topic

To locate books and other resources, Use ADVANCEWEB, the online Library Catalog of the University Libraries. This catalog contains resources owned by this library including books, videos, CD's, newspapers, microform and journal titles. Information can be found in both print and electronic tools. More current information and print sources are often duplicated in electronic databases accessible in Reference and by remote access. However, looking for information published before 1980, may lead you to print or microform sources which may not have an electronic counterpart.

ADVANCE (on-line public access catalog) can help you find library materials the University at Albany owns and also provides call numbers to find where they are located. You can search by author, title, call number, journal title, organization, or subject.

When searching ADVANCE for books, it helps to know the structure of Library of Congress Subject Headings. LCSH is a list of standardized terms that most academic libraries use to catalog topics. The following source lists LCSH terms.

African Studies Thesaurus. [Z 695.1 A37 O85 1992]
This source provides an explanation of how subject headings are developed using the African History classification outline as an example. Subject headings related to sub-Saharan Africa are indexed. To more easily identify terms from broad and narrow categories, the author added many cross-references based upon the 14th edition of the Library of Congress Subject Headings and other sources in the bibliography.

The Library of Congress Subject Headings bound volumes are located in the Reference Area. If you obtain zero results on a particular search in ADVANCEWEB or any other database, please see a Reference Librarian to assist you in finding appropriate terms for your topics.

The Library of Congress now uses subject heading African American of African Americans. However, other headings may need to be used to capture sources from a variety of historical periods. For example, you may also have to search "afro-americans". "Blacks" as a subject heading is used to describe works on blacks as an element of the population; "Black race" is used to describe works from an anthropological point of view. Related Library of Congress subject headings include:

Africa -- Politics and government Civil Rights United States

Searching For Articles by Topic

Many of the indexes and abstracts below are available via the University Libraries' Web Site. To search for journal articles by topic you must search print or electronic abstracts, indexes, or full-text sources and bibliographies. Print sources are often duplicated in electronic databases and sometimes found on the Internet. Online journals and databases can be accessed from one large list under "Database Finder" from the library home page. One can search by title for a known journal or database. However, you cannot search for articles by topic in this section. You must go to a specific subject index/database or to an individual journal site to search by topic.

Perhaps the best method is to go directly to "Subject Pages & Guides", then choose Africana Studies (or other subject) and then click on "Key Resources" to find the list of key resources on a topic recommended by each Subject Librarian. Unless a database is described as only being available in the library, you can use it from any computer on campus with Web access. Use the "About" button to find out more about each of the databases listed. For off-campus access, you may have to enter your password and campus identification information, however, once on the campus this is not necessary.

There are several places one might have to search to find articles. Here are a few.
"YES, this can be very confusing! Please feel free to call or ask for assistance at the Reference Desk!"

*Electronic Journals only available on the Internet, by scholarly associations ex) Electronic Journal of Africana Bibliography
*Full-text articles can be searched by topic from a particular database if the database contains full-text.
*Full-text articles appear in JSTOR or Project MUSE full-text journal packages. (See description below)
*Full-text articles can be searched from "aggregator" databases such as EBSCO or Contemporary Women's Issues or International Index to Black Periodicals. Other databases will list citations and possibly abstracts but may not include full-text. The following are examples of scholarly databases with citations: African Studies, Sociological Abstracts, Women's Resources International, International Political Science Abstracts. After finding the citations in print or electronic indexes, bibliographies, orreference sources, you must then check our ADVANCEWeb catalog to determine if we own the journal title in print or electronic format.

*Print indexes and abstracts
Example: Newman, Richard. Black Index: Afro Americana in Selected Periodicals, 1907-1949.
[E185 Z999 N48X]

Keyword Searching: Breaking Down Concepts into Basic and Advanced Searches

Many databases have a keyword option. Using this, you are likely to retrieve more results. Also, if you do not know specific subject headings, keywords can be searched throughout the record or the full-text article. These options vary depending on the database. Please consult with Reference librarians, especially if you have difficulty retrieving results.

"I am interested in finding an ethnographic study on African kinship."

Example of a simple keyword subject search or keyword title search:

ethnograph* and kinship and afr*

Here we have three separate concepts intersected with the "and" operator. The asterisk * acts as a wild card and looks for any word/s with that root. So afr* will also find the words African Americans and Africans as well as Afro-American. However, using the asterisk will take more time since the computer is searching every variation. When keywording a concept that may have several terms, use parentheses and separate the synonyms with the "or" operator. This allows you to add like or related terms. Intersecting the sets of related terms with "and" allows one to search for multiple topics, while locating at least one of the "like terms" from each of the sets.

"I am interested in African American involvement in civil rights movements."

Example of a broad combined topic search on African Americans and Civil Rights:

(afr* or blacks or race or racial or ethnic* or minorit*) and (civil rights or discrimination or segregation or boycotts or riots or protest or social movements)

Locating Periodicals
ADVANCE Library Catalog has titles of the journals we own, but will also include Internet sites for journals that the library has subscribed to electronically or to those that are freely available. It is important to remember that some journals are available online with the full-text of the journal but not always. Print journals, indexes, bibliographies may be important sources for your topic, particularly topics in history.
* Journal titles could also be listed in an "aggregator database index" called the "Serials Solutions" list this
list provides titles of journals and the corresponding database or index where the full text journal appears.

Select examples of print journals found in the Periodicals Room:

If the Libraries do not subscribe to a particular journal our own a book you want, you can order from our Interlibrary Loan Service using the ILLIAD electronic system. Please allow at least 3 weeks for this service.

Understand the differences between the World Wide Web, databases and libraries

The Web is not a database and it is not a library.

A database is a compilation of information that is organized into fields and can be
searched logically, with dependable results. Databases may be library catalogs, indexes,
or bibliographies, or they may be collections of statistics, directories of addresses, or
inventories of merchandise stock. The common element is organization and reliable
searchability.

A library is a collection of full text resources in many formats that have been selected for
their quality and utility. Libraries are arranged to facilitate research and use databases to
provide access to their collections.

The World Wide Web is an electronic means of accessing any information that anyone
wants to put on it academic or frivolous, commercial, altruistic, polemic. Anything goes
and does! The Web can be searched, and the fill in the blank search screen looks
much like its equivalent for a database. But search results on the Web can be puzzling
because the Web is not set up to be searched logically. Indeed, some Web enthusiasts
still militate against any kind of logical organization because it inhibits the Internet's free
spirit, and many sites use unscrupulous tactics to attract hits. Gretchen Walsh, Boston University

This source recognizes the sometimes arbitrary geographical de-limiters but classifies "North Africa" for the purpose of the bibliography to address the African regions "touching on the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic, rimming the great Sahara, and forming the eastern spur known as the Horn of Africa." Broken down by broad topic and by country and region, this source lists annotated bibliographies, Internet sources, reference works, academic and professional organizations and journals pertinent to the study of Northern Africa.
