State Health Department Offers Public Health Summer Internship Program
Undergraduate Students Must Apply by March 26, 2010

ALBANY, N.Y. (Thursday, March 11, 2010) – The New York State Department of Health is now accepting applications for the 2010 Public Health Works! Undergraduate Internship Program. The eight-week program, which introduces college student interns to the field of public health, will run from June through August 2010. Applications are due March 26.

Up to nine undergraduate students will be selected for summer internship positions in environmental health programs in state and designated county health departments, and at the Wadsworth Center Laboratories in Albany. In addition to gaining valuable, hands-on public health experience, interns will receive a $3,000 stipend for their work. All applicants must have completed some coursework in the natural sciences or public health.

The New York State Health Department was one of 10 agencies selected by the Association of Schools of Public Health (ASPH) and the Association of Public Health to receive a grant from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for the undergraduate internship program. The grant is part of the ASPH's "Pathways to Public Health" initiative, which was developed as a way for young people to learn more about public health education and careers.

"Creating a strong public health workforce is essential to meeting many of the health challenges we face, from combating the growing obesity problem to preventing outbreaks of diseases like H1N1 flu," State Health Commissioner Richard F. Daines, M.D., said. "These undergraduate internships will give students an opportunity to learn firsthand about public health careers, while also helping public health agencies deliver vital services."

The program introduces undergraduate students to the public health application of science, and bolsters efforts to recruit a new generation of public health employees. Interns will work in environmental health programs at state or local health departments, shadowing public health engineers, research scientists and sanitarians as they inspect restaurants, camps and swimming pools; regulate the water supply; and conduct research. Interns at the Wadsworth Center Laboratories will choose from rotations in a range of reference and testing laboratories that handle infectious diseases, genetics, public health preparedness, and environmental monitoring.

Post-Baccalaureate Internship Program

" The AIDS Health Project began its Post-Baccalaureate Internship Program in 1991 with short-term internships for college students. Today, as a one-year program, it has become an integral part of the agency’s structure and is designed to target college graduates who have an interest in the health professions, social services, or non-profit management.

This one-year program helps AHP not only to better manage the volume of high quality services we offer, but also to groom future mental health, social service, and public health providers with expertise in HIV care. It provides interns the opportunity to give back to the community while learning valuable skills and fostering professional growth. Past interns have gone on to enjoy successful careers in medicine, psychology, public health, social work, and public interest law.

Applications are due March 1, 2010 (early application is encouraged).

These are the facts about AHP, but they don’t begin to describe the experience in store for interns. We promise you will be challenged and enriched. Whether you are on the telephone screening clients or doing research for one of our publications, you will never forget how important your work is. And, among the more than 250 people associated with AHP, you will find some of the most expert, dedicated, caring and outrageously funny co-workers on the planet. We hope you will join them.

Post-Baccalaureate Internship Program Job Descriptions

Application and Application Procedure

Internship Facts and Figures

• Internships begin in July and last for one year.

• The work week for interns is 32 hours.

• Remuneration consists of an $900 per month housing stipend paid directly to each intern’s landlord. The bad press about the San Francisco housing market is, unfortunately, true. Housing is expensive, but $900 still buys a room in a shared flat or, with luck, a studio apartment. AHP can provide interns with a list of short-term housing providers that can help them find starter housing before they arrive.

• Most of our interns find part-time, paid employment that covers other living expenses and often leads to full-time work after their internship.

Science Career Center's Summer Internship

The Journal of Young Investigators (http://www.jyi.org) is a peer-reviewed non-profit online science journal targeted at undergraduates, and entirely run by undergraduate students from around the world. Since 1997, undergraduates and recent graduates, from over 50 different academic institutions in 9 countries, have worked to establish JYI as the top undergraduate science journal. Over the years, the JYI has received generous funding and support from the National Science Foundation, the Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Duke University, Science Magazine, Science Magazine's Next Wave, GlaxoWellcome, Inc., Swarthmore College, Georgetown University, and many others. Furthermore, for its excellent publications and innovative educational programs, JYI has been featured in Nature, The New York Times, The Chronicle on Higher Education, EurekAlert!, and other publications.

Most recently, the Science Career Center at JYI has composed an extensive list of undergraduate summer research opportunities. This list currently has 100+ undergraduate summer research internships available to college students for the summer of 2010, and internships are being added regularly. This list has stood out in the scientific community because there are opportunities in all fields of science and because it is constantly updated and maintained by the undergraduate staff at JYI.  Anyone can access the Science Career Center's Summer Internship listing at http://www.jyi.org/SCC/internships.php.

As most of these research opportunities have deadlines before March 1st, 2010, undergraduates are advised to carefully browse this list and start applying early! Moreover, it is encouraged to apply to more than one fellowship, since these are stipend-based and thus are sufficiently selective. Remember, summer internships and research experiences in general play a significant role in the scientific job market and graduate programs alike!

Furthermore, currently JYI is seeking motivated undergraduate students to join the staff at JYI. From associate editors to programmers to career researchers, JYI presents exciting opportunities to learn about the scientific publication process, organization management, career development and more. You can find which positions are available, as well as requirements and expectations, at http://www.jyi.org/participate.php. For more information on JYI, please take a look at the attached Fact Sheet.

NOTE: If you are an undergraduate, or know an undergraduate, who has completed a manuscript and would like to have it reviewed for publication in the Journal of Young Investigators, please see attached Call for Papers and visit http://www.jyi.org.

Cellular engineering is a new frontier of applied biology.  Understanding cellular function and manipulating cells/tissues to perform in a particular manner is the basis for many ventures in the biomedical, biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, including drug production from cell culture, generation of artificial organs for replacement of diseased tissues, and design of bioremediation processes for waste water clean-up.  Our faculty and research are at the forefront of cellular engineering innovation, performing cutting-edge work in biosensor development, cell and drug delivery, metabolic engineering and protein engineering.

The ICE REU program allows undergraduates to peform hands-on summer research while earning a stipend of $400 per week (up to $3,600). If funding allows, participating students may also be awarded support for housing, meals, and eligible travel expenses.

In addition to their research projects, students participate in a weekly seminar to educate them in the fundamentals of cellular engineering and provide professional development opportunities.  The ICE REU program provides undergraduates with a unique opportunity to network and collaborate with leaders in the field of cellular engineering.

The application deadline for the 2010 program is February 16th, so Apply Now!
