Set in and around Shanghai, EMPIRE OF THE SUN is a story of a young British boy who becomes separated from his parents at the out break of World War II and is placed in a Japanese prisoner of war camp. The story is based on the autobiographical novel by J. G. Ballard, who lived through a similar experience as an adolescent. Tom Stoppard wrote the film adaptation.
