Programs to Support Diversity

The University at Albany works to create an academic and social environment that celebrates diversity, assures equal opportunity, and fosters a global perspective — truly bringing The World Within Reach to our campus community.

This commitment is reflected across all administrative and academic departments in efforts to promote equal access, intellectual inclusion, and the meaningful integration of underrepresented and economically disadvantaged populations.

The Graduate School is charged with preparing professionals and scholars to work effectively in an increasingly diverse and globalized world. It meets this commitment through a wide range of initiatives that recognize and support cultural diversity and inclusion. Working closely with departmental faculty, the office recruits a diverse and talented cohort of graduate students, while developing programs to support academic success.

Assistantship and fellowship funding, which includes tuition support, is available on a competitive and merit basis. UAlbany also offers the competitive, merit-based Carson Carr Graduate Diversity Fellowship Program to graduate students who will contribute to the diversity of the student body. The award is named for Dr. Carson Carr, former director of UAlbany’s Educational Opportunity Program (EOP), in recognition of his stellar achievements in support of the recruitment, retention and graduation of underrepresented students.

The Graduate Opportunity Program provides full tuition scholarships to qualifying EOP, HEOP (Higher Education Opportunity Program), and SEEK (Search for Education, Elevation and Knowledge) program graduates.

Starting with a Welcoming Reception at the beginning of the fall semester, the School hosts several annual events geared toward strengthening the social network among minority and international graduate students. Included are:
  • A series of Brown Bag Luncheons focusing on diverse topics of interest held each Fall
  • A Holiday Gala in December as a prelude to the final examination period
  • A Graduate Student Speaker Series held each Spring, and
  • An End-of-the-Year Celebration in May to commemorate the completion of the academic year and honor the newest class of graduating students
