The Department of Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences offers M.S. and Ph.D. degree programs in a wide variety of research topics in atmospheric and environmental sciences. Taught by scientists from the Department, and the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center (ASRC), students are exposed to faculty and research that is funded externally by agencies such as the National Science Foundation (NSF), the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the Office for Naval Research (ONR), the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Air Force Office for Scientific Research (AFOSR) and the Electric Power Research Institute (EPRI). The ASRC and the local office of the National Weather Service (NWS) are both located in the Center for Environmental Sciences and Technology Management (CESTM), which is within easy walking distance of the Department. Opportunities exist for internships and cooperative research with the Albany National Weather Service office which is also located on the University campus.

The aim of the program leading to the Ph.D. in Atmospheric Science is to develop the student's ability to carry on scholarly research and to communicate the results concisely and accurately to the scientific community and the general public. Additionally, the program prepares the student for senior professional positions in the atmospheric and environmental sciences at academic institutions and in industry, government, or other agencies.
