There are two additional award categories that are being offered to women: the Bernice Mosbey Peebles '39 Scholarship award is being offered to support a deserving woman undergraduate of color whose studies at the University's College of Arts and Sciences are in preparation for a career in teaching. Women who have demonstrated both academic merit and financial need will be given special consideration.
In addition, The Initiatives For Women Fine Art Scholarship Award will support a young woman undergraduate majoring in the Department of Art whose studies are in preparation for a career in the fine arts. Again, special consideration will be given to women who have demonstrated both academic merit and financial need.
The deadline for applicants is Feb. 3. Applications are available in AD-301, or by calling 442-5415.
A May company spokesman, in noting that the Lord & Taylor Division hires close to ten Albany graduates each year, said, "This donation represents our support of programs and services that will enrich your students' lives. We thank you for your support of our programs and look forward to another great year in our relationship with the University at Albany."
Through coordination with the University's director of the Career Development Center, Victor J. DeSantis, and Joan Charnews, recruiting coordinator, May Department Stores support to Albany over the years has totaled more than $100,000.
University funds are available to award this research appointment for a period up to two years. Applications for study in any disipline represented on the campus are welcome. The application packet can be secured by calling Carson Carr, Jr., Assistant Vice President for Academic Affairs, at 442-3440. The application deadline is April 30.
The teaching assistants currently make about $7,600 a year. The agreements negotiated by their union calls for no salary increases through 1997, with 3.5 percent salary increases in March 1998 and March 1999. In addition, the tentative pact increases the union's health insurance plan.
Retail Donation
The May Department Stores, through the Lord & Taylor Division, has again, in 1997, donated $10,000 to the University. The funds will be used in the Career Development Center to fund a part-time graduate assistant for job development. In addition, the donation will fund, through the Office of Student Services, the Spellman Achievement Awards and also provide a junior intern scholarship.
Fellowships for Underrepresented
The Office of Academic Affairs has announced the funding of the 1997-98 Post-Doctoral Fellowship for historically underrepresented individuals (African Americans, Latino, and Native Americans). Students who have completed their doctoral degrees not later than April 30 or within the past four years are eligible to apply. The primary criterion for selection is evidence of scholarship potentially competitive for tenure appointments in research universities.
Labor Contract
The Pataki administration and the union for graduate and teaching assistants at state university campuses have negotiated a four year labor contract that calls for a pair of 3.5 percent salary increases. Before going into effect, the agreement must be ratified by the 3,900 members of the Graduate Student Employees Union. The union has been working without a contract since their first one expired in July of 1995. It declared an impasse in negotiations ten months ago when the Public Employment Relations Board began mediating a settlement.
