Due to support from Helga R. Karker, M. S. `75, the Universitys recently approved program in Biodiversity, Conservation and Policy has a growing reservoir of resources dedicated to its future through Albanys Pooled Income Fund Trust.
Mrs. Karker has contributed appreciated securities for graduate study and research in this program. A retired school psychologist, she says sees biodiversity and environmental issues as critical priorities in the coming years. She is an active member of the Appalachian Mountain Club, the National Wildlife Federation, and the Northern Forest Project. She retired to her home in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.
Margaret Stewart, professor of biological sciences and director of the program in Biodiversity, said that the first graduate students were enrolled in the program this fall. In acknowledging Mrs. Karkers donations, Stewart said, The future of this program will depend in good measure on private support. Mrs. Karkers leadership gifts help set the direction for us. The Helga Reissner Karker Fellowships will play an important role in attracting top students to study at Albany.
