Program Costs & Cost Estimates

Understanding Cost Estimates for UAlbany Study Abroad Options

UAlbany provides an Estimate of Costs for each of our study abroad options both on our website and in the acceptance packet sent to each student upon admittance to a particular program option.

Students must contact the administering campus for an estimate of costs for any non-UAlbany study abroad option.

Although all costs are subject to change, the estimate of costs usually includes tuition and fees, housing expenses, meals, approximate round trip airfare, books, insurance, pocket money; all reasonably predictable anticipated expenses associated with the particular study abroad program option.

The Estimate of Costs includes amounts payable to UAlbany and/or another SUNY campus. It may also include amounts that must be paid in local currency overseas. Many items on the Estimate are approximate amounts, so actual amounts paid may vary.

Amounts Payable to UAlbany:

All amounts payable to UAlbany will be billed to the student by UAlbany's Office of Student Accounts.

  1. Education Abroad Program Charges
In some cases, there will be Education Abroad Program Charges which include any applicable non-instructional expenses such as housing, meals, excursions, etc. Please refer to the estimate of costs for a particular study abroad option for details.
  2. Education Abroad Differential
The Education Abroad Differential includes UAlbany's administrative charge, overhead costs, and the student’s share of the difference between the actual instructional costs of a particular overseas option and regular SUNY tuition. A student’s instructional costs may be more than just the tuition UAlbany pays to the host university overseas. Therefore, the total of the education abroad differential and SUNY tuition may be greater than the published tuition of the host university. The education abroad differential is calculated separately for each study abroad option and is subject to change each term. (The differential may also include program expenses not collected in the Education Abroad Program Charges portion.)
  3. SUNY GeoBlue Health & Medivac Insurance*
SUNY policy mandates that all students studying abroad have health and emergency assistance insurance. Students are automatically enrolled in and billed for the SUNY GeoBlue Health & Medivac Insurance. In some cases, the host institution overseas requires students to purchase a particular international insurance policy. If this is the case, the cost of the host university insurance will be included in the Program Charge and the Estimate of Costs from UAlbany will indicate a charge for SUNY Evacuation & Medical Assistance only.

* For more information about SUNY’s overseas health insurance and emergency assistance coverage provided by GeoBlue, please visit the Health & Safety Abroad section of our website.

Amounts Payable to UAlbany OR your Home SUNY Campus

UAlbany students and non-SUNY students will be billed for all amounts listed on the Estimate of Costs by UAlbany's Office of Student Accounts through the e-pay system EXCEPT the amounts listed under 'Other Projected Expenses'. Students attending other 4-year SUNY schools will get two bills: one from their home SUNY campus for tuition and the university fee (and any other applicable campus-based charges) and another from UAlbany for all other study abroad charges listed above.

  1. Tuition Charges
UAlbany or your home SUNY campus will bill you for SUNY tuition based on your permanent residence (NY state or out-of-state) and current student status (undergraduate or graduate). UAlbany and non-SUNY students will be registered for study abroad at UAlbany and will be billed for SUNY tuition by UAlbany's Student Accounts Office through e-pay, along with all other study abroad charges. Students attending other 4-year SUNY schools will register for study abroad and pay tuition at their home SUNY campus.

At the time of your initial registration for study abroad, you will be registered for 15 credits each semester or for the usual number of credits awarded in a particular program. Upon successful completion of the term abroad, this number is adjusted to reflect the actual number of SUNY credits earned. Tuition is billed according to the original registration. It is subject to upward revision for students who complete more credits than they have paid for, but will not be reduced if fewer than 12 credits (or the minimum required for a particular program) are ultimately earned.

If you have already completed an undergraduate degree, are not enrolled in a degree program, and are participating in a study abroad option through UAlbany, you will be billed by the credit-hour at the undergraduate or graduate rate. If you take any courses for graduate credit, all your credits will be billed at the graduate rate.

All Students: SUNY tuition rates are set by the State of New York and may be increased at any time. Your tuition rate depends upon your legal place of residence and the number of credits for which you are registered.
  2. University Fee
The University Fee, which provides supplemental support for the academic mission of the University, is a mandatory fee for all students.
  3. Academic Excellence Fee
The Academic Excellence Fee is mandatory for all SUNY students attending a University Center. The funds are used to provide resources necessary for maintaining quality academic and student success programs.
  4. Technology Fee
The Technology Fee is one of the three components of the Comprehensive Service Fee, (which is made up of the Technology, Transportation, and Health fees) and helps support the IT needs of students, faculty, and staff by ensuring the infrastructure, information systems, and applications are in place to sustain a 21st century learning environment. The Transportation Fee and Health Fee components of the Comprehensive Service Fee are waived for UAlbany students participating in SUNY study abroad options but the Technology Fee is mandatory.

Additional information regarding these broad-based fees at UAlbany can be found here on the UAlbany Student Accounts webpage. All other on-campus fees are waived for UAlbany students participating in SUNY study abroad options, but some other SUNY campuses may not waive all fees for students studying abroad. Other SUNY students should check with their home campus for details.

Other Projected Expenses

The types and amounts of items listed under the 'Other Projected Expenses' section of the cost estimate vary based on the particular study abroad option selected. For example, this section may contain the approximate cost of obtaining a passport and visa, round trip airfare, and an estimate of possible miscellaneous personal expenses. UAlbany does not bill you for these items; instead these estimated amounts may be paid directly to vendors, the overseas institution, or at the overseas site. Some amounts may need to be paid prior to your departure (such as plane tickets) and others may need to be paid in local currency overseas (to pay for meals, for example). In essence, these figures represent reasonable expectations of what you may need to spend above and beyond the amounts that you will be billed by UAlbany and/or your home SUNY campus.

The amounts listed under 'Other Projected Expenses' are estimates and may increase or decrease due to exchange rate fluctuations and personal spending habits.
