Description of Fees

Fee Descriptions (per semester)

Broad-Based Fees
Mandatory Broad-Based fees include but are not limited to the Intercollegiate Athletics Fee; Recreation and Campus Life Fee; the University Fee; the Comprehensive Service Fee offering Transportation, Technology and Health Services; and the Academic Excellence Fee.  More information, including exemptions, can be found here.

Athletics Fee
Mandatory Fee. $300.00 for 12 or more credits, $225.00 for 9-11 credits, $150.00 for 6-8 credits. Funds the intercollegiate sports programs including team transportation, uniforms, etc. More information, including exemptions, can be found here

Recreation and Campus Life Fee
Mandatory Fee. $104.00 for 12 or more credits, $78.00 for 9-11 credits, $52.00 for 6-8 credits. This fee is comprised of two components. The Recreation portion of this fee provides access to a range of programs to meet student recreational needs, including Aquatics, Fitness & Wellness, Group Exercise, Outdoor Pursuits, Intramural Sports and Club Sports. The Campus Life fee supports efforts to create the co-curricular experience for students and the campus community while creating a vibrant campus environment with a variety of activities available for students on a daily basis. Comprehensive Service Fee
Mandatory Fee. $679.00 for 12 or more credits (per credit, $56.58 if under 12 credits). Made up of 3 components, this fee covers the University's cost of providing most Student Health Services, Counseling & Psychological Services (CAPS), and the Center for Behavioral Health Promotion and Applied Research; access to technology; and access to transit and shuttle services.  

Graduate Student Employee Union Comprehensive Service Fee
Mandatory Fee. $525.00 for 12 or more credits (per credit, $43.75 if under 12 credits). The GSEU status is provided by the Office of Human Resources Management. Graduate students who are represented by the GSEU by the applicable deadline are charged at the GSEU Comprehensive Service Fee Rate. Click here to learn more.

University Fee
Mandatory Fee. $62.50 for 12 or more credits ($5.21 per credit); provides supplemental support for the academic mission of the University. See here for exemptions.

Course Fees
Mandatory Fees. Students who register for any one of the courses listed here will also be billed for the corresponding course fee on their Tuition Invoice.  Course fees will be used solely to support the additional costs for materials, supplies and special services related to the course.  

Academic Excellence Fee
Mandatory Fee. $187.50 for 12 or more credits, $15.63 per credit. The funds are used to provide resources necessary for maintaining quality academic and student success programs.  More information and exemptions can be found here.

One-Time New Student Fee
The One-Time New Student Fee supports UAlbany undergraduate students throughout their undergraduate careers. Programs supported by this fee include:

  • Two-day Orientation program for all non-EOP freshman students
  • Transfer Advisement sessions and Transfer Orientation for all incoming transfer students
  • Connect2UAlbany programming for first- and second-year students
  • Prepare4Success programming for third- and fourth-year students
  • Online Orientation entitled Great Dane Beginnings
  • Student Success Center programming
The New Student Fee is mandatory for all new students excluding online degree candidates, IELP, Certificate Programs, Continuing Education and EOP. The fee is non-refundable. For more information, visit Orientation and Transition Programs.

Student Activity Fee
Mandatory Fee. $100.00 for 12 or more credits, $75.00 for 9-11 credits, $50.00 for 6-8 credits. Funds the groups, programs, and activities of the Student Association. See here for exemptions.

Student-Alumni Partnership
Optional Fee. $30.00 for all students taking six or more credits. The Student-Alumni Partnership allows students to tap into a network of more than 145,000 alumni, take advantage of the numerous programs designed to help students gain business, professional and leadership skills. From networking and spirit events to scholarship opportunities, the Partnership is designed to help students make the most of their UAlbany experience. If you do not wish to support the Partnership, you must opt out each semester by the published deadline by completing the Student-Alumni Partnership Opt-Out Request.

You may authorize the University to pay your Student-Alumni charge with your Federal Financial Aid. This charge must be paid each semester by all undergraduates and graduates, matriculated and non-matriculated, taking six or more credits who do not elect to opt out by the due date.

Graduate Student Association Fee
Mandatory Fee. $25.00. Paid by all graduates to support the programs, activities, and services of the Graduate Student Association. See here for exemptions.

International Health Insurance
Mandatory Health Insurance Fee. 18-19 Rates: Fall 8/15/2018 - 1/14/2019 (5 months = $591.11); Spring-Summer 1/15/2019 - 8/14/2019 (7 months = $821.15). Comprehensive coverage for medical expenses, generally incurred off-campus, arising from covered accidents and sicknesses. The insurance is mandatory for international students and scholars on F and J visas and for students studying abroad. Medical Evacuation Fee
Mandatory International Fee. 18-19 Rates: Fall 8/15/2018 - 1/14/2019 (5 months = $33.34); Spring-Summer 1/15/19 - 8/14/2019 (7 months = $46.68). Includes medical evacuation and repatriation benefits. This fee is mandatory for international students and scholars on F and J visas and for students studying abroad.

SEVIS Fee
Mandatory Fee. The SEVIS fee is for all International students who are F and J visa holders. This fee supports compliance with federal mandates for reporting and tracking International students and scholars and is non-refundable for course withdrawals bearing an official drop/withdrawal date of the first day of the semester or later. (NOTE: The University's SEVIS Fee should not be confused with the $200 SEVIS Fee paid by visa applicants.) Summer Service Fee
Mandatory Fee. This $49.00 fee supports most services available from Student Health Services and the maintenance and development of technology and electronic resources on campus. Mandatory for all students.

Winter Service Fee
Mandatory Fee. A $49.00 fee supports most services available from Student Health Services and the maintenance and development of technology and electronic resources on campus. Mandatory for all students.

Late Registration
A $40.00 fee that is charged to students who register after the regular registration period ends.  If you have a question regarding a Late Registration fee, please e-mail the Registrar's Office at Registrar@albany.edu.

Late Payment
An amount charged after each invoice due date for unpaid balances. Charges are as follows:

  • Equal to amount owed for balances of $2.01 to $5.00
  • $5.00 for balances above $5.00 through $20.00
  • $10.00 for balances above $20.00 through $100.00
  • $30.00 for balances above $100.00 through $1,000.00
  • $40.00 for balances above $1,000.00 through $2,000.00
  • $50.00 for balances over $2,000.00

Late Fee Appeal Policy

Class Dues
Optional Fee. $3.00 optional sponsorship of undergraduate class-specific (e.g., Class of 2019) events and activities, including voting privileges in class elections.

Five Quad
Optional Fee. $5.00 optional contribution to the University's student-volunteer ambulance service corps. 

Student Health Services
Student Health Services Charges appear on your E-Bill along with tuition and fees. No paper bills will be sent. These charges include some in-house laboratory testing, medical equipment, immunizations, oral and other contraceptives, nasal steroids and anti-histamines, for medications dispensed above the maximum allotment each fall and spring semester, and for all medications dispensed during the summer semester.  You may authorize the University to pay your Health Center Charges with your Federal Financial Aid.*

Library Charges
Library Charges appear on your E-Bill along with tuition and fees. No paper bills will be sent.  You may authorize the University to pay Library Charges with your Federal Financial Aid.*

Room Damage Charges
Room Damage Charges appear on your E-Bill along with tuition and fees. No paper bills will be sent. You may authorize the University to pay Room Damage Charges with your Federal Financial Aid. Authorization only needs to be completed once per academic career. If you decide you no longer want your financial aid to be used to pay these charges, you will need to notify the Student Financial Center via e-mail at sfc@albany.edu.
