Online MPH Degree Application

The online MPH provides a convenient way for public health professionals and others interested in the field to obtain a master's degree in public health. Like our traditional MPH program, the part-time program, online MPH program provides a strong academic foundation in the core disciplines of public health and opportunities for students to apply new knowledge and skills in the public health field.

Required Application Materials

  • Official transcripts (submitted directly to SOPHAS from all institutions attended)
  • GRE (institution code: 4216), MCAT, PCAT, DAT, GMAT or LSAT scores
    •  Official GRE and MCAT scores must be sent directly to SOPHAS.  All other official scores must be sent directly to the School of Public Health Admissions Office.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Resume

*Applicants requesting a waiver of the the standardized test must submit the Standardized Exam Waiver Request

International Requirements

Note: At this time we are only able to accept international students if they are living in the US for the full duration of their study. Please note that F-1 and J-1 students are not eligible for enrollment to the online MPH program.

Admission Requirements

  • Must hold a bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing
  • Minimum GPA 3.00 in a completed bachelor's and/or graduate degree
  • One semester of mathematics (algebra or pre-calculus) or statistics with a grade of B or higher
  • One semester of social sciences

  • Official transcripts sent directly from the schools attended to SOPHAS from EVERY post-secondary academic institution attended, including college coursework completed during high school. 
  • UAlbany students must have an official UAlbany transcript sent directly to SOPHAS.
  • Applicants who use the transcript entry service provided by SOPHAS should note that the entry process adds TWO FULL WEEKS to the time it takes for an application to be verified and considered complete by the admissions committee.

Three Letters of Recommendation

  • All minimum of two letters must be from academic faculty.
  • At least one letter must be from a university faculty member in the major field of study.
  • Applicants who have been out of school for five years or more may submit professional references.

Personal Statement

  • Why do you wish to pursue a career in public health and why are you interested in your chosen area of concentration?
  • 1500 word limit


All MPH degree applications to the School of Public Health must be submitted through SOPHAS.

The following criteria must be met, otherwise SOPHAS will not verify your application:

  • Personal statement has been submitted.
  • All coursework has been recorded on the application.
  • All supplemental questions have been answered
  • All official transcripts have been received
  • Two out of three recommendations have been received

SOPHAS will not hold your application for the following items. However, these items are required by the School of Public Health for your application to be considered complete. Applications will NOT be reviewed if these items are not received.

  • Standardized test scores
  • International transcript evaluations (WES)

*Please not that once SOPHAS has received all of your application materials, it may take up to 4 full weeks for your transcripts to be verified by SOPHAS. Be sure to request all transcripts, references, and standardized test scores in advance so that your application can be completed and verified by the specified application deadline.
