PhD Biomedical Sciences Degree Application

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is designed to prepare students for scholarly and professional positions and careers in academic institutions, public agencies, and industry. The objective of doctoral study is to develop each student's ability to conduct original, advanced research as an independent scientist.

Applications and all supporting materials for the PhD in Biomedical Sciences must be submitted directly to the University at Albany Office of Graduate Admissions.  Applications for this program are no longer accepted through SOPHAS.

Required Application Materials

  • Official transcripts (submitted directly to the University at Albany from the institution attended)
  • Official GRE scores (institution code: 2532)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • Personal Statement
  • Resume

International Requirements

  • WES evaluations for international transcripts. Evaluations are not required for Canadian transcripts if the language of instuction is English.
  • Minimum TOEFL score of 100 (institution code: 2532), two semesters of full-time study at a US college or university, or completion of an undergraduate degree in a country where English is the official language and language of instruction

Application Requirements

  • Must hold a bachelor’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing
  • Grade point average of 3.00 or better
  • A combined total of at least 42 credits in biology, chemistry, mathematics, and physics.
  • Prior research experience, either through an undergraduate experience, enhanced summer research, or post-baccalaureate degree
  • Applicants in both programs are reviewed in the context of academic preparation and performance, potential for success, fit for the graduate program, as well as potential match with mentor

  • The personal statement must have well-defined research interests
