Michelle Wemette, '16, Recipient of 2014-2015 David Axelrod Fellowship

Michelle is an MPH student concentrating in Biomedical Sciences. Originally from the Adirondacks, she graduated with a bachelor’s degree in animal science and a minor in biology from Cornell University. During the academic year, she worked as a student research assistant in a laboratory studying equine immunology at Cornell’s College of Veterinary Medicine and spent her summers as an agricultural intern with the Cornell Cooperative Extension, working at her local animal shelter, and furthering her involvement in biological research. Following graduation, she continued working at the veterinary school as a diagnostic technician in the Animal Health Diagnostic Center. Her work there performing a variety of serological tests for the detection of diseases ranging from Lyme disease in canines to Johnes disease in cattle, sparked her interest in the field of public health. Now, as a student at University at Albany, she remains interested in the intersection between zoonoses control, epidemiology, and policy.
