Q & A with Joe Bonilla, BA ’11

If you had to condense your job description into an elevator pitch, how would it read?

Joe: As managing partner and senior media director, I am the lead practitioner responsible for day-to-day management of a growing public relations, event management, and consulting firm rooted in promoting businesses, organizations, and public figures emanating from the Empire State and beyond.

What about your job inspires and excites you every day?

Joe: As a diversified public relations and outreach firm, we handle several facets of a company's public outreach efforts. Every day is vastly different. On one day, we may be handling a visit by a presidential candidate to one of our client's venues, and on the he next day, organizing a tour with an elected official or high-level stakeholder of one of our manufacturing clients. And in-between, designing materials for an advertising campaign or a new product being released to the general public.

How did Rockefeller College prepare you for your career?

Joe: Rockefeller prepared me to think analytically about how particular policies, if enacted, play out on a local, state, and regional level. Whenever we advise a client about potential ramifications of a municipal ordinance or a law that affects their operations from a public relations point of a view, it is rooted in the preparation I received at Rockefeller.

What is one piece of advice you would share with a current Rockefeller student?

Joe: There is not one set path for success; you have to keep your eyes open for opportunities. An incredible way to increase your opportunities is through networking with the vast number of Rockefeller College alumni in various fields — government, law, public relations, etc. Make the most of those connections to further your future.

When you're not on the job, where can you be found?

Joe: I love to travel so, in any given weekend, I could be anywhere from Saratoga Springs to South Beach to San Francisco. I do, however, love patronizing Albany's many establishments, primarily on Lark Street or in the Warehouse District.
