Rockefeller College Hosts NASPAA 2015 Career
Professionals Conference

More than 50 career service professionals from 18 states and the District of Columbia attended the Network of Schools of Public Policy, Affairs, and Administration (NASPAA) 2015 Career Professionals Conference hosted by the University at Albany’s Rockefeller College of Public Affairs & Policy, December 10-11.

Keynote Speaker Rick Lathrop
During the two-day conference in Albany, career services directors and staff from NASPAA member schools discussed a variety of topics, including advising students on internship and job searches, networking with employers, training students in career search skills, and managing career offices.

The conference keynote speaker was Rick Lathrop of Global Services Corps, a U.S. based nonprofit international development volunteer organization that offers service-learning volunteer, internship and study abroad opportunities around the globe. In his remarks, Lathrop, GSC founder, executive director, and Africa & Asia program director, stressed the importance of relationship building in public service and the need to have compassion for those you serve. “He really provided the framework for the conference because he put into perspective why we do what we do," said Katherine French, director of admissions for the public policy programs at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

Conference attendees had numerous opportunities to hear from and interact with accomplished professionals from both the public and private sector who represented a wide range of organizations, including state and federal government, finance, community-based service, higher education, and international development. Among the experts who participated were representatives from the New York State Department of Health, New York State Division of the Budget, New York State Homes and Community Renewal, New York State Assembly and Senate, Congressional Budget Office, KPMG, Moody’s Investment Services, Girls Inc., International Hispanic Network, Pilot Peak Consulting, Milbank Memorial Fund, Trust for America’s Health, Pride Center of the Capital Region, Binghamton University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and Devex International Development.

This year’s conference was sponsored by Maximus, Inc., devex, CareerShift, and the Capital District Transportation Authority. NASPAA’s 2016 Career Professionals Conference will be hosted by the Frank Batten School of Leadership and Public Policy at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville.
