About Professor Hoffmann

Hoffmann's major fields of research and teaching are (1) Comparative politics, especially state-society relations and Russian domestic institutions; (2) Democratization and marketization in postcommunist transitions; (3) Political economy of industrialized societies; (4) International politics, especially East-West relations and Russian foreign policy.

Publications include: Can Democracy Take Root in Post-Soviet Russia? Explorations in State-Society Relations (1998), Post-Communist Studies and the Social Sciences: Essays on Methodology and Empirical Theory (1993), Soviet Foreign Policy: Classic and Contemporary Issues (1991), and Technocratic Socialism: The Soviet Union in the Advanced Industrial Era (1985).
