    Dr. Agrawal’s laboratory focuses on the structure and function of the cell’s protein synthesizing machinery, the ribosome. Specifically, his group uses cutting-edge three-dimensional cryo-EM as one of the main tools to study structures of translational complexes in order to understand the mechanism of both bacterial and organellar ribosomes. His group published the first cryo-EM structures of the organellar (both chloroplast and mitochondrial) ribosomes, and has made pioneering contributions in understanding the mechanistic aspects of the translation process, such as how transfer RNAs and translation factors interact with ribosomal RNA and proteins. One of the interests in his laboratory is to investigate how leaderless mRNAs are recognized by a ribosome.
