Welcome from the President

I am pleased to welcome you to the 3rd Annual President’s Forum on Data. Each year, as part of the UAlbany 2020 Program and the UAlbany Advanced Data Analytics Network, the University at Albany convenes leading experts to explore data as a resource in the development of new knowledge and economic opportunity, as well as a tool in policy making and problem solving.  This year’s Forum addresses a critically important societal topic: Transforming Emergency Management and Homeland Security with Data Analytics.

Across the nation, groundbreaking advances in capturing, managing, and using data to safeguard our homeland, enhance emergency preparedness, bolster extreme weather resiliency and strengthen public health response are making it possible to better protect our citizenry and our nation’s critical infrastructure.

At UAlbany, our researchers are contributing to these advances in numerous ways. In our research laboratories, scientists are pursuing innovative data analytics techniques and applications across multiple disciplines including climate and weather, public health, transportation, social networks, and homeland security, among others. In our classrooms, faculty are working to enhance the learning environment and curriculum to ensure that our students are well prepared for an evolving job market that is increasingly demanding skill sets and competencies in advanced data analytics. In partnership with practitioners, UAlbany researchers are using cutting-edge techniques to build models of systems and policies to improve public protection and emergency management.

The 2016 President’s Forum on Data complements UAlbany’s robust programs in these areas by bringing together stakeholders from across sectors to engage in an exciting and timely discussion of the interdisciplinary significance and societal impact of data analytics on homeland security and emergency preparedness and response.

We invite you to join us for this exciting journey.
