Assistant Vice Provost for Academic & Faculty Affairs Benjamin J. Weaver

Dr. Benjamin Weaver serves as Assistant Vice Provost for Academic and Faculty Affairs. In this role, he oversees numerous functional areas and processes necessary for the effective administration of the Division of Academic Affairs and to ensuring the continued excellence of Albany’s faculty and academic staff.

He joined the Office of the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost in 2007 and has over a decade of professional experience in higher education. His academic appointments have involved responsibilities in the areas of research, grant funding and writing, project and grant management, campus planning, institutional research, personnel administration, facilities management, and public engagement.

Prior to coming to the University at Albany, Dr. Weaver served as a research assistant at the State University of New York System Administration’s Office of Institutional Research and Analysis and held research and program/grant management positions at Rutgers University’s Edward J. Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy. Within his profession, Dr. Weaver is active in several organizations, principally the Society for College and University Planning and the National Indian Education Association, the nation’s leading advocacy organization for educational equity and excellence for American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Native Hawaiians.

To accomplish this, Dr. Weaver guides programs and policies designed to aid our faculty and staff in advancing their careers, recognizing and celebrating their achievements, achieving high-quality work/family lives, and equipping them with the opportunities necessary to provide an outstanding education for our students, grow our cutting-edge research and creative works, and make important service contributions to our external communities. Within his portfolio, Dr. Weaver’s duties include:

Faculty and Academic Personnel Functions:

  • Managing the tenure and promotion processes

  • Overseeing the faculty and academic personnel hiring processes

  • Managing nominations for Excellence Awards in research, teaching, and service

  • Facilitating promotion nominations to the rank of SUNY Distinguished Professor

  • Developing policies on promotion and tenure, faculty leaves, salary equity, and the working conditions and compensation of contingent and part-time (adjunct) faculty and staff

  • Providing guidance and clarification to pre-tenure faculty on the tenure and promotion process

  • Serving as the Provost’s liaison on LGBT and diversity issues and concerns

  • Advising deans, department chairs, and others on academic personnel matters

  • Advising search committees on processes and strategies for recruitment

  • Promoting the hiring of excellent and diverse faculty members by developing, implementing, and interpreting hiring processes and policies

  • Verifying eligibility for sabbatical and other leaves

  • Managing performance programs and evaluations for the Provost’s review and action

Administrative Functions

  • Space management and allocation

  • Class cancellations due to weather or other emergencies

  • Information technology needs

  • Classroom facilities

  • Emergency management and planning

  • Academic event planning (e.g. Burton Lecture, Honorary Degrees, Collins Fellows, etc.)

  • Strategic Planning

  • Implementation of Key Policies and Initiatives
