The Theatre Program of the University at Albany’s Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to present Six Scenes in a Theater by Kathryn Walat for six public performances at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus from October 16-20, 2019. The schedule includes performances on Wednesday & Thursday, October 16 & 17 at 7pm; Friday, October 18 at 3pm & 10pm; Saturday, October 19 at 2pm & 7pm and Sunday, October 20 at 2pm.

Six Scenes in a Theater is the creation of Theatre Program Assistant Professor/Resident Playwright Kathryn Walat who conceived of and wrote the play especially for UAlbany students and the Performing Arts Center’s circular Arena Theatre. It is set in a haunted college theatre, just before Halloween, in two time periods: 1969 and the present. In both, students are preparing for a production of Thornton Wilder’s classic Our Town. The production is directed by New York City-based Ivey Lowe working with a cast of Theatre Program students playing ten characters.

“The play is a ‘love letter’ to people who make theatre, depicting the wide range of identities within a theatre program, from actor and director, to playwright and designer,” says Walat. “It asks the question: ‘Why do we do what we do?’ and it shows connections between theatre students across the 50 years that the play spans.”

“With the play’s production, I’m also interested in exploring what makes something spooky, in the theatre, which is very different than scary movies,” says Walat.

The production is directed by Ivey Lowe and Robert Dalton. Lowe says, “At its core, Kate has written a story about young students navigating connection and gaining the courage to go after what they want. This story is especially thrilling to tell at UAlbany and with the students for whom it was written. Six Scenes in a Theater is the perfect show to resonate with students, and will treat everyone to a spooky fall evening at the theater.”

Together with Walat, Dalton and Lowe, the creative team includes: Assistant Director Savanah Lanz, Costume Coordinator Reneé M. Bell, Lighting Designer Andi Lyons, Assistant Lighting Designer Ali Calegari and Sound Designer Dimitri Vasilakos.

The cast includes Max Conaway, Emily English, Billy Feerick, Marilyn Feerick, Sammie Gault, Colin Gioia, Matthew Heyda, Mickey O’Donnell, Jillian Sharp and Samantha Wilson.

Advance tickets are $17 for the general public and $12 for students, seniors and UAlbany faculty-staff.  Tickets purchased on the day of the show (pending availability) are $22 for the general public and $17 for students, seniors and UAlbany faculty-staff.  For reservations and further information, contact the Box Office at (518) 442-3997.
