The Music Program of the University at Albany’s Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to present recent graduates Melanie Shank and Joshua Tanis for a concert entitled Transitions and Turning Points on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 7pm at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.  The program will include works by Donald Swann, Lee Hoiby, Aaron Copland, Sergei Rachmaninoff, Kurt Weill and Richard Strauss.

Now New York City based Melanie Shank, soprano, graduated from UAlbany in 2012 with a BA and double major in Voice Performance and Psychology. She went on to obtain her MM in Vocal Performance in 2016, graduating with honors from the Crane School of Music at SUNY Potsdam. A true lover of art song, Shank has participated in various recitals and series including the Fall Island American Art Song recital, First Reformed Church of Scotia series, Tuesdays at Noon at St. Paul’s and several ENY/NATs honors recitals. Shank‘s operatic roles include Janthe in Der Vampyr (Opera Company Brooklyn), Sister Constance in Dialogues of the Carmelites (Resonanz Summer Music Festival), Suora Infermiera in Suor Angelica (Mosaic Arts) and Ensemble in La Traviata (Hubbard Hall Opera Theater). Musical theater credits include Daughter in Quilters the Music (Crane Opera Ensemble/Community Performance Series) which included performances in Potsdam, Saranac Lake, Clayton and Loweville.

Joshua Tanis, a collaborative pianist and music theorist, graduated from UAlbany in 2013 with a BS double majoring in Music and Biology. He went on to simultaneously pursue an MM and MA in music theory and collaborative piano, respectively, at Hunter College. He is currently a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in Music Theory at Florida State University.  Now based in Tallahassee, Tanis continues to keep a busy coaching and performing schedule. His collaborations include working with singers from Metropolitan Opera, New York City Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Royal Opera House Covent Garden and La Teatro alla Scala.
