Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company Performance Kicks Off Two Different Series

The UAlbany Performing Arts Center, with support from the College of Arts and Sciences, University at Albany Foundation and University Auxiliary Services, is pleased to present the Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company on Thursday, September 20, 2018 at 7:30pm

The company’s performance is the first offering in the Dance in Albany series, a joint series sponsored by The Egg and UAlbany Performing Arts Center. Featuring nine companies which range in style from classic modern and Latin contemporary to tap and hip-hop to multi-sensory movement, the performances in the series take place either at the Empire State Plaza venue or at the Performing Arts Center on the main campus of the University at Albany.

The company’s performance also marks the kick off of the 25th anniversary celebration of UAlbany’s College of Arts and Sciences which is marking the occasion with a month-long series of events.  The company’s program will commemorate this anniversary by presenting works that Artistic Director Ellen Sinopoli has created over the years in collaboration with faculty from the College of Arts and Sciences.

Set to an electronic score composed by Joel Chadabe, faculty emeritus from the Department of Music, Relay is a fast-paced ensemble work that is loosely based on a relay race.  Also choreographed to music by Chadabe, Pierre’s Words is a dual collaboration created with poet Pierre Joris, faculty emeritus from the Department of English, who will perform live with the dancers.  Involving patterns of groups which combine crystallizing stillness and loose driving energy, Clusters is layered with nature images from Thom O’Connor, faculty emeritus from the Department of Art, which are projected onto the dancers and the stage. Texture of the Whole was created in collaboration with Keith Earle of the Department of Physics during a semester long residency.  It utilizes more than a dozen laws of physics deeply intertwining the science with the dance.

In addition, the program will be highlighted by a premiere dance choreographed specifically for the occasion to music by William Matthews played live by the Capital Trio, the ensemble in residence at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center.

“I’m honored that my company’s performance will commence the incredible and diverse Dance in Albany series created by The Egg and the UAlbany Performing Arts Center and I’m equally thrilled that the performance will be the inaugural event of the College of Arts and Sciences milestone anniversary,” says Sinopoli.  “The creative genius coming out of UAlbany is phenomenal and I am humbled to have been able to collaborate with so many of these innovative, artistic and generous professors whose imaginations and talents have inspired and informed my choreographic process.”

Currently celebrating its 27th season as resident company of The Egg, The Ellen Sinopoli Dance Company shares its work with diverse audiences through concerts, showcases, residencies, workshops, educational initiatives and community out-reach. Artistic Director Ellen Sinopoli has created over 80 dances since forming the company in 1991. Well known for its artistic collaborations, the company’s projects serve as a conduit to bring together talented artists (both regional and national) from varied genres that include visual artists, sculptors, architects, composers and musicians, poets and storytellers, videographers, photographers and physicists.
