GUEST PIANIST PERFORMS SECOND CONCERT

The Music Program of the University at Albany’s Department of Music and Theatre is pleased to present guest pianist Akina Yura on Saturday, March 2, 2019 at 7pm at the UAlbany Performing Arts Center on the uptown campus.  Yura’s first concert at UAlbany was in March of 2018.

Yura’s program will feature Cloud Atlas by Japanese composer Toshi Ichiyanagi, a contemporary of Shishido. The concert will open with the Variation on an Original Theme by Brahms and close with Fantasie by Schumann – works by composers who were also contemporaries and held a close, but complex relationship with one another. The program will also include Fantasia Baetica, another fantasy, this one by the Spanish composer Manuel de Falla.

Akina Yura is a Japanese pianist and expert in 20th and 21st century Japanese music.  A Presser award recipient from the Frost School of Music at University of Miami, Yura has extensively researched the works of Mutsuo Shishido and has performed them around the globe. Her debut CD “Mutsuo Shishido: Complete Works for Piano” was published by MSR Classics and praised by critics. “I cannot imagine a better advocate for this music than the wonderful young pianist Akina Yura… much of this music requires fingers of steel and great agility, and Yura pours it on,” claimed Fanfare while American Record Guide declared, “Yura does an astounding job of bringing this wonderful composer to our attention with her fantastic playing.”

Yura has appeared as a guest performer for the Pianodrom International Piano Festival in Albania and as a collaborative pianist for the Castleman Quartet Program. She holds piano performance degrees from the University of Maryland (B.M.), Indiana University Jacobs School of Music (M.M.) and the University of Miami Frost School of Music (D.M.A.). Her previous teachers include Santiago Rodriguez, Edward Auer, Shigeo Neriki, Mikhail Volchok, and Nathan Buckner. Currently, Yura serves on the piano faculty at The College of Saint Rose and Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as well as at The Music Studio.
