Clery Act Compliance at the University at Albany

Our foremost concern is the safety of students, faculty, staff and visitors

The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act, or Clery Act, requires that all colleges and universities disclose crimes that have occurred on their campus to the federal government.

The University at Albany and University Police Department strive to promote and maintain a campus environment conducive to academic achievement. A truly safe campus can only be achieved through the cooperation of the entire campus community. With your help and participation and our commitment, we are confident that the time you spend with us will be safe and productive.

 

Campus Security Authorities

Under the Clery Act, The University at Albany has designated certain administrators and staff as Campus Security Authorities (CSA) in recognition that many students, faculty and staff are hesitant about reporting crimes to the University Police Department and may be more inclined to report incidents to non-law enforcement administrators and staff instead. They have completed training on appropriately handling reporting crimes, victim relations and support, and related school policies.

 

Who they are

The University at Albany has designated the following as a CSA:

  • Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education
  • Professional staff in Student Affairs except for the Student Health Center and Counseling Center staff
  • Senior staff in the Office of Human Resource Management
  • Academic Advisors in Advisement Services Center Undergraduate Studies (ASC/US) and Educational Opportunity Program (EOP)
  • Professional staff in Athletics, including coaches
  • Faculty Advisors to student groups
  • Staff in the Office of Equity and Compliance

 

What they do 

A CSA has a duty to report an incident to the appropriate law enforcement personnel including the University Police Department, local police department or any University at Albany campus affiliation that should be informed due to the nature of the incident.

A CSA is required to report an incident whether or not the victim chooses to file a report with law enforcement or press charges, although the CSA may withhold the identity of the victim or reporting person.

If the victim or reporting person chooses to report the incident to the University Police Department, local police department or any University at Albany campus affiliation that should be informed due to the nature of the incident, the CSA must assist them in doing so.
