Biomedical Ethicist Joins Board of Hastings Center

ALBANY, N.Y. (December 9, 2004) -- UAlbany Professor Bonnie Steinbock has been elected vice-chair of the Fellows Council and ex officio member of the Board of Directors of the Hastings Center in Garrison, New York. She was elected a Fellow of the Hastings Center in 1986.

Steinbock, on the faculty of the department of philosophy, is an authority on biomedical ethics, particularly reproduction and genetics. She is the co-editor, with John Arras and Alex London, of Ethical Issues in Modern Medicine (6th edition, 2002), author of Life Before Birth: The Moral and Legal Status of Embryos and Fetuses (1992), and the editor of Legal and Ethical Issues in Human Reproduction (2002).

The Hastings Center is an independent, nonpartisan, and nonprofit bioethics research institute founded in 1969 to explore fundamental and emerging questions in health care, biotechnology, and the environment.
