Donald Siegel Named Dean of UAlbany's School of Business

ALBANY, N.Y. (April 30, 2008) -- Interim President George M. Philip announced the appointment of Donald Siegel as dean of the University at Albany's School of Business. Siegel, professor of entrepreneurship and associate dean of the A. Gary Anderson Graduate School of Management, University of California, Riverside, will succeed Dean Paul Leonard, who is returning to his academic appointment of professor of finance.

"Dr. Siegel brings a level of scholarship and expertise in cutting-edge technological innovation and entrepreneurship that will further enhance our academic strengths and help position the School as one of the top in the nation," said UAlbany Interim President George M. Philip. "I am grateful for the work of Dean Leonard, who provided significant leadership through a critical period and tirelessly championed for several initiatives, including the new School of Business building."

Siegel's research and teaching have focused on topics related to university technology transfer, economics and strategic implications of entrepreneurship and technological change, productivity analysis, private equity and corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility. Siegel is editor of the Journal of Technology Transfer and also serves as president of the Technology Transfer Society, a non-profit organization devoted to the interdisciplinary scholarly analysis of technology transfer from universities and federal laboratories to firms. He is also an associate editor of the Journal of Business Venturing, the Journal of Productivity Analysis, and Academy of Management Learning & Education.

Siegel’s papers have appeared in such leading journals as the American Economic Review, Economic Journal, The Review of Economics and Statistics, Journal of Law and Economics, Journal of Financial Economics, Brookings Papers on Economic Activity, Research Policy, and Academy of Management Review. He recently published two books with Oxford University Press: Innovation, Entrepreneurship, and Technological Change and the Handbook of Corporate Social Responsibility.

Siegel has received grants or fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and National Science Foundation, among others. He has also served as a consultant to several organizations and business, including the United Nations, the National Research Council, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. Siegel was a member of a team of researchers that conducted a comprehensive study of the Small Business Innovation Research Program across federal agencies for the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy of the National Academy of Sciences. He is a member of the Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Commerce on "Measuring Innovation in the 21st Century Economy."

Siegel will assume his new role on July 1.
