Dean Donald Siegel's research and teaching have focused on topics related to university technology transfer, the economic and strategic implications of entrepreneurship and technological change, productivity analysis, private equity and corporate governance, and corporate social responsibility. Siegel is editor of the Journal of Technology Transfer and also serves as president of the Technology Transfer Society, a non-profit organization devoted to the interdisciplinary scholarly analysis of technology transfer from universities and federal laboratories to firms. He is also an associate editor of the Journal of Business Venturing, the Journal of Productivity Analysis, and Academy of Management Learning & Education.

Siegel has received grants or fellowships from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation and National Science Foundation, among others. He has also served as a consultant to several organizations and business, including the United Nations, the National Research Council, Goldman Sachs, and Morgan Stanley. Siegel was a member of a team of researchers that conducted a comprehensive study of the Small Business Innovation Research Program across federal agencies for the Board on Science, Technology, and Economic Policy of the National Academy of Sciences. He was a member of the Advisory Committee to the Secretary of Commerce on "Measuring Innovation in the 21st Century Economy" and recently served as a member of Governor David Patterson’s Small Business Task Force.
