Associate Professor of Mathematics and Statistics Marco Varisco's s field of expertise is algebraic topology, which is the study of algebraic approximations of space. His research focuses on algebraic K-theory and homotopy theory, with motivations and applications in geometric topology, more specifically in the classification of manifolds and the study of their symmetries.
His work has been published in prestigious journals such as Advances in Mathematics and Crelle’s Journal, and is currently supported by a grant from the Simons Foundation. He is regularly invited to speak at international conferences and universities.
Originally from Italy, Varisco earned his Ph.D. from Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster in Germany. After a postdoctoral appointment at Binghamton University, Varisco joined the University at Albany in 2010. Since then he has taught 19 different courses and advised 4 Ph.D. students.
In 2015 he received the College of Arts and Sciences Dean’s Award for Outstanding Achievement in Teaching.
