Meg McCarthy, director of the New York State Capital Region OASIS, which is housed on the UAlbany campus, was recognized at a national conference in October in St. Louis. McCarthy was given a letter of recognition for her dedication to improving the lives of mature adults by Josefina Carbonell, the U.S. Assistant Secretary for Aging.

OASIS is a national not-for-profit organization that aims to enrich the lives of mature adults. OASIS creates opportunities for older adults to continue participating in their community in the arts, in health and fitness, and as volunteers. The New York Capital Region OASIS program is sponsored by the University and located on the UAlbany campus, in the Center for Excellence in Aging Services at the School of Social Welfare.

"OASIS exemplifies what is possible when private and public organizations join together for the better good," Carbonell said. "From the beginning, the U.S. Administration on Aging and OASIS shared the same vision - successful, independent community-based living for older adults. We know that people who stay engaged in their communities feel empowered - they feel connected and that they are accomplishing something."

OASIS also celebrated its 25th anniversary at the conference. The New York State Capital Region OASIS, which opened in 2002, serves nearly 2,500 mature adults.
