UAlbany senior Aniel Luna presents a sales pitch for a client in front of executives.
ALBANY, N.Y. (Feb. 26, 2018) – Choosing the right internship for you may at first be overwhelming, but hearing directly from your peers brings the experience to life.
That's what will be happening at UAlbany’s first Student Internship Poster Expo on Wednesday, Feb. 28, from noon to 2 p.m. in Campus Center West.
A sampling of almost a dozen internship posters that will be presented: Working with Turner Broadcasting Company. Collecting data on the weather in Taiwan. Translating legal documents from English to Spanish for prisoners in Latin America. Working with the New York State Police.
The fair is a collaboration between the offices of Undergraduate Education and Career and Professional Development.
“We are pleased to work in collaboration with Career and Professional Development on this inaugural event,” said Vice Provost Jeanette Altarriba, who will introduce President Havidán Rodríguez at the beginning of the event.
“Being able to showcase our ‘Career Ready Great Danes’ highlights that knowledge and skills acquired in the classroom are directly applicable to our students’ professional lives. Through internships, our students are able to finesse these skills and learn industry-specific competencies,” Altarriba said.
Aniel Luna is a senior marketing and information technology major from the Bronx whose work will be featured in a poster at the event.
“At Turner Broadcasting System, I was a digital account services intern for their news media platforms,” he said. “In the department I interned for, we focused on CNN, Great Big Story and HLN.”
Luna took screenshots of advertisements on digital platforms to show clients how their ads looked when they were up and running. His office also kept track of how many viewers the advertisements reached.
“Aside from the work I did in the office, I really took this opportunity to get out of my comfort zone and network,” Luna said.
His favorite part was the final internship project, in which he was grouped with four interns from other departments.
“We had to come together and create a robust sales pitch for a client of our choice, and then present it in front of executives,” he said. “My passion is around media, and these kinds of experiences help me learn about the different business aspects that go into a media company.”
Faculty and staff are also invited to Wednesday’s fair, and are encouraged to nominate students for this event in the future.
