About the Director

Michael Pfitzer

Michael Pfitzer (mpfitzer@albany.edu) is Lecturer in Music and Director of Choral Studies at SUNY-Albany. He joined the Albany faculty in 2018 after teaching at Harvard University, Boston University, Framingham State University, and the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

An advocate for creating strong communities through music, he has conducted a number of Boston-area community choruses, including the Cambridge Community Chorus, Voices of Metrowest, and the Wakefield Choral Society. Pfitzer has led international choral performances in Brazil, France, and Romania, and has made music in churches, schools, prisons, and everything in between.

In addition to choral music, Pfitzer has conducted musical theatre and opera productions and performed as an oratorio soloist with the Boston Modern Orchestra Project and Sounds of Stow. He is currently completing doctoral work at Boston University, and has received a Master of Music degree in Choral Conducting from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music and History from Tufts University.

Director Emeritus: David Griggs-Janower, conductor, was Director of Choral Music and Professor at the University at Albany, State University of New York from 1981 until his passing in 2013.
