2009 Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region
University Art Museum, University at Albany

The Regional
The 2009 Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region Juried Exhibition will be held June 25 through August 8 at the University Art Museum, University at Albany. This annual exhibition is collaboratively sponsored by the University Art Museum and the Albany Institute of History & Art.

Eligibility
The exhibition is open to artists residing within a 100-mile radius of the Capital Region. Works in all media that have been completed in the past three years are eligible. Works must be available for this exhibition. Works previously exhibited in Mohawk-Hudson Regionals are not eligible.

Juror
Matthew Higgs (b.1964) is a curator, critic, and artist currently living and working in New York City. Since the early 1990s he has sought to develop a practice that considers the intersections and overlaps between these disciplines. Over the past 15 years he has organized more than two hundred exhibitions and projects in Europe and North America. His writings have appeared in more than fifty books, catalogs and periodicals, including Artforum, Frieze, and Afterall. In the past two years he has contributed to books for artists such as John Baldessari, Ken Price, Kay Rosen, Elizabeth Peyton, Marilyn Minter, John McCracken, Christian Marclay, Oliver Payne & Nick Relph, and Uta Barth, amongst others. Higgs is currently the Director and Chief Curator of White Columns, New York's oldest alternative non-profit art space. Since his arrival at White Columns in the fall of 2004, he has organized more than one hundred individual exhibitions and projects, showing the work of more than 400 international artists of all generations.

Procedure
All images must be supplied in digital format. Slide submissions are no longer accepted. Each artist may submit one view of up to five works created in the last three years in jpg format on a CD (can also be on a DVD disk). Sculptors may submit two views of each work.

Digital images on CD:

  • must be in jpg format only.
  • should have a maximum image size of 10 inches on the longest side @ 300 dpi (or 3000 pixels), not to exceed 3 mb image size.
  • must be numbered sequentially (1-5) to correspond to your entry form (see instructions below).

Each digital image must be labeled as follows: artist last name; artist first initial; title (or abbreviated title); and number (i.e. 1-5).

Be sure that your images are numbered in the same order as listed on the Entry Form. Please test your CD before you submit it. Please note that submitted materials will not be returned.

Videos
Video artists should submit one DVD (NTSC, region code 1) containing up to three works (or excerpts) totaling no more than 10 minutes in length and playable on a DVD player. Video artists must supply their own equipment if selected for the exhibition.

Installations
Installation artists will be required to submit detailed proposals and drawings, keeping in mind the museum’s space limitations (door widths, wall heights, etc.) and bear all installation costs. Call the museum to discuss limitations before submission of written proposals.

Entry Fee
A non-refundable entry fee of $20.00 will be charged to assist with exhibition costs. Please make checks payable to The University at Albany Foundation and enclose with CD, Entry Form, and resume.

Entries Due
Entries must be postmarked no later than Wednesday, March 25, 2009 or received at the University Art Museum by 4:00 pm Friday, March 27, 2009. Notifications of works selected for the final judging process will be e-mailed by Friday, April 24, 2009.

Delivery of Work
Artists selected for the final judging process will be expected to deliver their artwork to the University Art Museum on Wednesday, May 20 (10am - 4pm) or Thursday, May 21 (10am – 7pm). Artwork must be labeled with artist name and title of work and suitably framed or mounted (no exposed glass edges) with hanging wire securely attached to the frame. The University Art Museum reserves the right not to accept any artwork in fragile or unstable condition and to improve upon hanging devices if necessary.

Final Jury Selection
Notification of works selected after the final judging process will be e-mailed on Wednesday, May 27, 2009. The decisions of the juror are final. Artwork not selected for exhibition will be available for pickup on Thursday, June 4, and Friday, June 5, between 10am to 4pm.

Reception
A Reception and Awards Ceremony will be hosted at the University Art Museum on June 25th, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Awards Ceremony is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Purchase Awards
One or more purchases are made by the University Art Museum and the Albany Institute of History & Art for their museums’ collections.

Juror’s Awards
Cash and gift awards totaling over $3,000 will be presented. Recipients will be selected by the juror.

Invitational Exhibition
An invitational exhibition will be drawn from 2009 Artists of the Mohawk-Hudson Region and presented at the Albany Center Gallery.

Catalogue
An illustrated catalogue with an essay by the juror will be published by the University Art Museum and will be available during the exhibition.

Liability
The University Art Museum does not assume responsibility for CDs while in transit or when on its premises. Submission of images for judging constitutes an agreement by the artist to the conditions of this prospectus. It is understood that entering the Regional indicates that the University Art Museum is authorized to photograph, and/or reproduce in any media, any accepted work for purposes, including, but not limited to catalogue, website, educational, publicity, and marketing for this exhibition only. All work selected for this exhibition will be insured by the UAM for the duration of the exhibition. All reasonable care will be exercised in the handling of the works received. The UAM will not act as agent for work offered for sale nor will a commission be taken in the event of sale.

Removal of Work
For works selected for exhibition, removal dates are: Monday, August 10 and Tuesday, August 11, between 10:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.
