Ruth Nivola , Tre Re Maggi, 1985-86. Metallic yarns and Indian silks. 20x5 inches.

Born in Munich, Germany.

Ruth Nivola grew up in Europe before settling in the U.S. in 1939 at the outbreak of World War II. Her mixed-media jewelry, such as Tre Re Maggi, combines sculpture with ornament. She recycles non-precious materials such as buttons, fabric, and metallic threads to create contemporary jewelry. Tre Re Maggi reminds us of the spiritual power that ornament once had.

Nivola also sews, weaves, and crochets many of her pieces, subverting the need for precious metal solder. Like a crazy quilt, her work contains a variety of elements embedded within a woven web-like structure.
