Research areas: Democratic theory, rhetoric and politics, feminist theory, and the history of political thought
Professor Shanks has published work on rhetoric and political critique in early modern political thought, on new materialism, and on consent. Her current projects focus on political judgment, toleration, posthumanism, and "The Racial Contract." She is the author of Authority Figures: Rhetoric and Experience in John Locke's Political Thought (Penn State UP, 2014).
