School of Business Networking Event Scheduled in New York City
Join School of Business Dean Paul Leonard ’75, ’76; alumni; faculty; staff and students April 19, 6-8 p.m., at Sardi’s Restaurant in midtown for a reception celebrating School of Business Metro New York alumni and friends. Bring your classmates and participate in the “Decades Challenge,” a friendly competition in which members of the decade with the highest attendance win great UAlbany memorabilia! Tickets are just $35 per person and include beverages and hors d’oeuvres. Register online by April 13.

John E. Burton Lecture and Awards Ceremony Planned
Alumni are invited to attend the 22nd Annual John E. Burton Lecture and Distinguished Public Service Awards Ceremony May 8 at 4:30 p.m. in the Page Hall Auditorium on the downtown campus. This year’s lecture will be delivered by New York State’s newly elected lieutenant governor, David A. Paterson. Awardees include Sharon Dawes ’72, ’91; David Kaczynski; Mary Ann Fish; and John C. Egan. Seating is limited, so be sure to RSVP by May 4 to (518) 442-5373 or e-mail [email protected].

Capital District Writing Project Summer Institute Planned
The Capital District Writing Project (CDWP) invites teachers to apply for the 2007 Summer Institute June 25-July 19. Along with a pre-institute retreat in May, the Summer Institute provides teachers with the opportunity to renew their teaching and writing skills with study, discussion and plenty of writing. CDWP offers a stipend of $1,000 to the teachers selected to participate. Applications are due April 1. To learn more, visit our Web site.

Roberson Leads a New CETL
The Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL) has a new name – the Institute for Teaching, Learning, and Academic Leadership. To go with its new name, it has a new leader, Director Bill Roberson, who started his faculty workshop Feb. 2 in the Campus Center Assembly Hall by giving the professors a quiz. Full story >>

Carr and Briar-Lawson Win New Kermit Hall Award
Dr. Carson Carr Jr. and Dr. Katharine Briar-Lawson are the recipients of the inaugural Kermit L. Hall Transformative Leadership Award. In honor of our late president, this special award recognizes one faculty member and one professional staff member who have contributed greatly to the University and/or surrounding communities by building collaborative relationships across a wide range of diversity-related areas. Chancellor Ryan to Leave SUNY
State University of New York Chancellor John Ryan has announced that he will resign his position May 31, 2007. Ryan is leaving to head the Center for Creative Leadership in Greensboro, N.C. Ryan was appointed chancellor in December 2005. He is a former superintendent of the U.S. Naval Academy, a retired admiral, and past president of the State University of New York Maritime College; He also served as interim president of UAlbany from February 2004-February 2005.

Doctoral Program Ranks Among Top in Nation
The doctoral program in Educational Administration has been recognized as one of the top 10 programs in the nation, according to The Chronicle of Higher Education. A new index for ranking doctoral programs, conducted by Academic Analytics, has ranked the top programs in 104 fields and the top 10 programs in 24 disciplines. The Educational Administration program ranked seventh in its discipline. Full story >>

UAlbany Unveils Documentary Studies Program
UAlbany is launching a new interdisciplinary, undergraduate program in documentary studies. The program is designed to provide a solid grounding in both the theoretical research and hands-on aspects of documentary film, writing or broadcast media while also preparing students for careers in this profession. NanoCollege Reports Breakthrough in Production of Exposed Images Using ASML EUV R&D Lithography Tool
Less than six months after taking delivery of the world's first full-field extreme ultraviolet ("EUV") research and development tool ("ADT"), UAlbany’s College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering announced that it has produced the world's first exposed images while using the tool in a development environment. Two UAlbany Students Named Moot Court All-Americans
Three teams of UAlbany undergraduate students competed at the American Collegiate Moot Court Association's national tournament Jan. 19-20 at Regent University in Virginia Beach, Va. By virtue of their performance in the national tournament, Alison Bain-Lucey and Patrick Chamberlain were named ACMA moot court All-Americans. Full story >>

New Institute for Critical Climate Change in the Humanities Formed
The seismic shifts that are occurring in the environment at large are also being felt in the critical theory environment. Humanists at the University centers at Albany and Buffalo, recognizing these transitions, are taking a leadership role in opening up a new series of discussions aimed at addressing these 21st-century horizons by forming an Institute for Critical Climate Change in the Humanities to be housed at UAlbany within the Center for Humanities, Arts, and TechnoSciences. School of Social Welfare Celebrates U.S.-African Partnership for Building Stronger Communities Project  
The U.S.-African Partnership for Building Stronger Communities Project held a reunion and conference Feb. 16-17 at the School of Social Welfare. The event celebrated the project’s seven years of taking students, faculty and community-based practitioners to Africa. A poignant keynote address was given by Antoinette Sithoe from Soweto, South Africa, the sister of Hector Peterson, who at age 12 was shot and killed by police as he and other youth protested apartheid in 1976.

UAlbany Researcher Awarded Grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association  
Dr. Zhen Huang, a researcher in UAlbany’s chemistry department, has been awarded a $135,000 grant from the Muscular Dystrophy Association to identify potential drug candidates for neurodegenerative conditions. Huang and other researchers in Professor Li Niu's chemistry laboratory are studying a special family of proteins crucial to brain functioning, such as memory and learning. The proteins’ abnormal behavior has been implicated in stroke, epilepsy and neurodegenerative diseases such as ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. Full story >>

Grant Bolsters Research in Global Education Policy  
The Department of Educational Administration and Policy Studies in the School of Education has received a $250,000 award from the Ford Foundation to support its Comparative and International Education Policy Program. The program, which undertakes scholarship and advanced -level training around emerging global issues in education policy, conducts research, participates in major public policy debates and trains researchers and practitioners at the doctorate and master’s levels. Men’s Basketball Ends Great Year
The Great Danes made the 65-team NCAA tournament for the second consecutive year, finishing with a 23-10 record -- the most wins by a Great Danes team since moving to Division I in 1999. Jamar Wilson finished his UAlbany career as the school’s all-time leading scorer with 2,164 points.

Men’s Lacrosse Ranked Second in Nation
Men’s lacrosse is ranked #2 in the latest U.S. Intercollegiate Lacrosse coaches’ poll, the highest ranking in the program’s history. The Great Danes are 5-0 and are one of only four undefeated teams left in the country.
