Tri-City ValleyCats to Honor UAlbany Men's Basketball Team
Time for peanuts, cracker jacks and you know ... baseball -- the UA Way! Come join UAlbany alumni at the Joe June 29 as the Tri-City ValleyCats honor the America East champion UAlbany men's basketball team. The entire championship team will be present before the game to sign autographs. Don't miss Coach Brown as he throws out the first pitch of the game against the Vermont Lake Monsters at 7 p.m. Tickets are $6.50 for Alumni Association members/$7 for nonmembers. D.C. Alumni and Friends Barbecue Picnic Set
Enjoy the summer with great food and good company July 8, 3-6 p.m. at the D.C. UAlbany Chapter annual BBQ bash. Alumni, friends and families are welcome. Come for plenty of food and fun! New Dates for Sicily Trip Added
Relax and enjoy seven nights in the medieval town of Taormina, wonderfully situated with spectacular views of the Ionian Sea and Mt. Etna, Europe’s largest active volcano. This alumni travel experience includes a visit to Greek colony in Agrigento, exploration of the Archeological Park in Syracuse and a short cruise across the Strait of Messina to the Italian Mainland and the town of Reggio di Calabria. 2,800 Join the Ranks of UAlbany Alumni
An estimated 2,800 students participated in the 162nd commencement ceremonies May 20-21, including 1,845 undergraduate and 990 graduate degree applicants. The undergraduates, who hailed from 52 foreign countries and 17 states, received degrees in 54 different majors. The University also awarded three honorary degrees at the graduate commencement ceremony. Recipients include former UAlbany president Vincent O'Leary, Maureen A. Baginski ’77, ’79 and Alphonse Fletcher Jr. Full story >>

UAlbany Champions Partnerships with China
University at Albany President Kermit L. Hall signed a comprehensive agreement with President Lizhong Yu from East China Normal University (ECNU) to expand research collaborations, joint degree and curricular programs, and provide regular student and faculty exchanges. Hall has focused on China in his endeavors to internationalize UAlbany as a higher education institution. Full story >>

Hall Names Hargett Chief China Advisor
President Kermit L. Hall has named Associate Professor of Chinese Studies James Hargett as senior policy advisor to the president on China relations. As senior advisor, Hargett will counsel the president on the University's burgeoning collaborations and partnerships with higher education institutions in China. Hargett has led classes and exchange programs with China since joining the University in 1990. He taught at Princeton-in-Beijing Chinese Summer School, Beijing, and lived and studied in Hangzhou and Shanghai in the late 1980s.

Guggenheim Foundation Honors UAlbany Professor and Novelist
UAlbany Professor of English and Writer in Residence Lynne Tillman has been awarded a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. The fellowships are awarded to professionals who have demonstrated exceptional ability by publishing a significant body of work in the fields of natural sciences, social sciences, humanities and the creative arts. EBARA, UAlbany NanoCollege Launch $5M Nanoelectronics R&D Partnership
EBARA Corporation, a Japanese-based equipment and component supplier for semiconductor manufacturing, will conduct next-generation nanoelectronics research and development at the Albany NanoTech complex as part of a $5 million program being launched in partnership with the College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering at the University at Albany. Public Service Awards Bestowed
Morris “Marty” Silverman was posthumously awarded the School of Social Welfare Distinguished Public Service Award at the 21st annual John E. Burton Lecture for his pioneering humanitarian work. Silverman, who died Jan. 26, 2006, at the age of 93, was a successful businessman who became one of the greatest philanthropic supporters of social services, educational and health-related causes in the Capital Region. Also honored were Christine Ward ’75, assistant commissioner for the State Archives, by the College of Computing and Information; William Johnson Jr., former mayor of Rochester, by the Rockefeller College of Public Affairs and Policy; and John Dunne, senior counsel at Whiteman Osterman & Hanna, by the School of Criminal Justice. Don't Throw Out Your Used Computer – Donate It!
The Department of Information Studies is holding a used technology drive to solicit donations of used computer equipment to be refurbished and donated to the Sunnyside Center in Troy, NY. The center provides children with a safe, supportive atmosphere while they participate in recreational and educational activities. Full story >>

Reading Professor Inducted to Reading Hall of Fame
School of Education Professor in Reading Peter Johnston was inducted into the Reading Hall of Fame at the International Reading Association’s 2006 Annual Conference. The Hall of Fame is an independent organization comprising national and international leaders who have made contributions to the field of reading and literacy. Inductees are elected to this elite membership by their peers. Full story >>

The School of Education Earns Accreditation
The School of Education has been accredited for its graduate teacher preparation program by the National Teacher Education Accreditation Council. With this recognition, three of the School’s departments – Educational and Counseling Psychology, Educational Theory and Practice, and Reading – are offering nationally accredited graduate programs. Students Experience Real World Marketing
UAlbany students presented their successful marketing plan for the Honda Fit car to Honda’s ad firm, Rubin Postaer and Associates. Marketing classes from UAlbany, Boston College, Michigan State, New York University, and 11 others were chosen to help launch the youth-oriented vehicle. Before the student-generated grassroots campaign, 5 percent of UAlbany students knew about the car. Post-campaign, the number jumped to 47 percent.


ATHLETICS

Mens’ Basketball – A Year In Review
Visit the Athletics Web site for a pictorial year in review of the men’s basketball team. The site includes photos from the America East Conference championship game and the Great Danes at the 2006 NCAA Tournament. The Great Danes put together their most celebrated season at the Division I level in 2005-06, winning the America East championship and earning a berth in the NCAA tournament.

UAlbany Names Athletes of the Year
Jamar Wilson, an All-America guard in basketball; Blair Buchanan, a volleyball setter who received All-America honors for the second straight year; and Casey Halloran, a record-setting softball pitcher; have been chosen as UAlbany’s 2005-06 male and female Athletes of the Year. The athletes were selected in voting by the head coaches of UAlbany’s 19-sport intercollegiate athletic program. Full story >>
