The Big Purple Growl & Ferocious Feast is celebrating its 10th anniversary, and you’re invited to join the party! Enjoy an evening of Great Danes basketball, fabulous food, games and prizes Feb. 3. The Great Danes women’s and men’s teams take on the Binghamton Bearcats in the SEFCU Arena at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m., respectively. Road Trip to America East Basketball Conference Tournament Planned
The Alumni Association is planning a bus trip to the America East Conference Tournament at Boston University March 3-4. The package will include round-trip bus transportation, an all-session pass and a hospitality suite at a local hotel. Details will be available in late January.


Senator Chuck Schumer, Alumnus Richard Wesley Address UAlbany Graduates
U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer and Richard C. Wesley '71, a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, offered congratulations and words of advice to graduates at UAlbany’s winter commencement in December. A total of 507 undergraduates earned bachelor's degrees; 368 graduate degrees, including 85 doctoral degrees, were awarded.

University Responds to Need for General Education Seats
This summer, when freshmen were advised and registered prior to coming to campus for orientation, for the first time in recent memory, they all got into the classes they wanted. Over the past two years, the University has made significant improvements in the manner in which it tracks the supply and demand for undergraduate courses. It has made particular strides in providing courses that meet General Education requirements. Full story >>


Social Work Students Volunteer to Help New Orleans Rebuild
Nine UAlbany students spent part of their winter break in New Orleans, volunteering to help repair hurricane-damaged houses, one of the largest problems facing the city in the wake of 2005's devastation by Hurricane Katrina. The graduate students at the School of Social Welfare gutted homes in the severely affected lower 9th Ward, paving the way for other teams to start rebuilding. Full story >>

Social Work Professor Receives Outstanding Practice Research Award
Professor Zvi Gellis received the Outstanding Practice Research Award for his paper Randomized Controlled Trial of Problem-Solving Therapy for Late Life Depression in Home Health Settings at the fifth International Conference on Social Work in Health and Mental Health, in Hong Kong, China, in December. The conference included 1400 papers from more than 30 countries. Gellis is director of the School of Social Work’s Center for Mental Health and Aging. Full story >>

School of Education Announces New Scholarships
The School of Education has announced the addition of five scholarships, bringing the total of named and endowed awards to 20. The new scholarships include:
● the Richard M. Clark Scholarship for doctoral students who have authored a paper that has been accepted for presentation at a professional conference
● Jack’s Fund, in memory of Professor Emeritus John Ether, for students with a demonstrated interest in working with disadvantaged individuals
● the Secondary Education Scholarship for students pursuing a teaching career
● the Gladys G. Sawyer ’37 & J. William Sawyer ’31 Scholarship for undergraduate students pursuing education careers
● the Paul Saimond Memorial Scholarship for students pursuing careers in secondary teaching or school leadership

Unique High School-University Collaboration Produces Many Rewards
This past academic year, Associate Professor Bob Yagelski of the Department of Educational Theory and Practice, and Guilderland High School English teacher Alicia Wein pioneered a new form of multi-level collaboration in their co-teaching of Yagelski’s graduate class “Perspectives on Teaching Writing in the Secondary School” and Wein’s 12th grade FOCUS English class. After meeting through the Capital District Writing Project, each educator realized the benefits to be reaped from experience in the other’s educational venue. Full story >>

Business Students Create Investment Club
Thanks to the work of three motivated School of Business juniors, UAlbany will have an Investment Club. Delta Sigma Pi brothers Matthew Alfieri, Michael Reynolds and Vincent Cisternino researched groups established at other schools and then pitched their plan to Dean Paul Leonard. The Center for Institutional Investment Management is providing $100,000 in seed money. The UAlbany School of Business Investment Group will manage a diversified mutual fund.

NanoCollege Collaborates to Grow High-Tech Jobs  
UAlbany's College of Nanoscale Science and Engineering and Hudson Valley Community College are launching a joint effort to provide critical education and training for students pursuing careers in the nanoelectronics industry, while at the same time beginning discussions with Einhorn Yaffee Prescott (EYP) Architecture & Engineering PC of Albany on another initiative designed to grow high-tech jobs. International Groups To Focus on Digital Government Research  
UAlbany's Center for Technology in Government (CTG) has selected four groups of international researchers to receive funding to advance digital government research on issues that cross national boundaries. United States participation in the groups will be supported by $280,000 over the next three years, made possible through a $1 million grant to CTG from the National Science Foundation's Digital Research Program earlier this year. America East Women’s Basketball Championship Set for March
The America East Women’s Basketball Championship will be held March 8-11 at Binghamton University’s Events Center. Ticket packages for the tournament are available now at the Events Center Ticket Office, by phone at 607-777-SLAM or online at An all-session pass is $45 for adults and $25 for youth.

Save the Date for Indoor Track and Field Championship
The 2007 Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track and Field Championship will be held at Boston University’s Track and Tennis Center Feb. 16-17. Albany's men and Boston University's women captured the titles at the 2006 America East Indoor Track & Field Championships. Ticket information is not yet available.
