LLC's MISSION

The Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures helps students to develop communication skills in foreign languages—speaking, listening, reading, and writing—and also to understand the linguistic phenomena, literatures, and cultures common to the speakers of those languages. The department regards proficiency in foreign languages as not only a professional and intellectual asset, but also as the key to effective citizenship in a globalized and multicultural world.

  • LLC’s faculty regularly teach these languages: Arabic, French, German, Italian, Latin, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.
  • LLC offers a PhD, MA, BA and BA/MA in Spanish as well as minors in French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish.  If a major is not currently available, students may pursue creating a student-initiated interdisciplinary major. Student-initiated interdisciplinary minors (scroll to the bottom of the link) are also possible.
  • LLC offers 150+ courses each year in language, literature, the cultures of the languages studied, and cinema.
  • LLC enrolls over 3000 students each year.
