2-Step Login on the Way for Faculty and Staff

ALBANY, N.Y. (October 7, 2019) -- UAlbany is gearing up to deploy new tools to protect accounts.

Information Technology Services is introducing a 2-step login process for all faculty and staff beginning this fall. The process, which is also known as multi-factor authentication (MFA), involves using a second method to verify account credentials beyond your password.

ITS is providing information sessions on Tuesday, Oct. 8 in the Campus Center Board Room. The sessions will run from 9-9:30 a.m., 9:30-10 a.m., 10-10:30 a.m. and 10:30-11 a.m.

The process, which was introduced across student email accounts in 2018, helps protect accounts from getting compromised through phishing or other malware attacks. Similar to the process used when accessing a banking website, faculty and staff who are using 2-step login will be prompted to enter their credentials, and then take the additional step of receiving a one-time code, text, call, or push notification to complete the authentication process.

The 2-step login process remains one of the best ways to improve your account security and keep your credentials from falling into the wrong hands. By some estimates, cybercriminals have now hacked information from more than 8 billion accounts, with those details now for sale on the dark web.

UAlbany is working with Duo Security to introduce the new service. Faculty, staff and others who have access to the University’s integrated administrative system (IAS) will be the first to be enrolled starting this fall.

Anyone who has access to IAS will be required to use 2-step login by the end of the fall semester in order to use either IAS or the MyUAlbany portal.

ITS will begin enrolling all remaining faculty and staff in the spring of 2020.

As is commonplace across the world, ITS has found that passwords alone are no longer an effective or secure basis for authentication. That 2-Step Login works as a deterrent/preventative control is evidenced by the fact that since UAlbany implemented 2-Step Login for students in the summer of 2018, the number of compromised accounts per-year dropped from more than 700 to almost zero.

Additional information can be found on the 2-step login information page. As always, any questions can be directed to the ITS Service Desk at (518) 442-3700, or submitted online through the ITS Help and Support website.
