Message from the Dean and Vice Provost

Dr. Harvey CharlesThe state of New York is one of the world’s leading centers for the arts, entertainment, trade, finance and education. Indeed, New York is at the epicenter of globalization, this unrelenting and inexorable force that is transforming the nature of human relations around the world in real time. The University at Albany, SUNY is fortunate, not only to be situated in this state, but also to be located in its dynamic and progressive capital city of Albany. In addition, the University at Albany is also part of the largest system of higher education in the United States and is one of the four research campuses in this public university system. This position confers upon us amazing opportunities but it also presents us with even greater challenges, particularly in terms of discovering what it means to be a public research university, striving to meet its historic mission in a global age.

Succeeding within this context, meeting our obligations to students, pushing the boundaries of knowledge, and facilitating a culture where faculty can thrive mean that we must integrate an international, intercultural or global dimension into everything we do as an institution of higher education (Knight, 2004). This is what it means to internationalize the campus and this is what we are committed to doing at the Center for International Education and Global Strategy.

We are well along the path to becoming a global campus. Our faculty receive millions of dollars each year to engage in dozens of research projects with colleagues around the world, seeking to find answers to the greatest challenges that confront humankind, practically all of which are global in nature. Increasingly our curriculum is reflecting the imperative to teach from a global perspective and more opportunities are being created to support students in pursuing global research, global internships and global study. Ten percent of our student body is international and a strategic plan is currently being implemented that will increase this percentage to near 20% in the next few years. We have developed strategic partnerships with institutions and organizations around the world that will facilitate relationships with successful researchers, bring the best and brightest students to our classrooms and help keep us at the forefront of innovation and discovery. Our commitment is to prepare students who are globally competent and to transform ourselves into a global campus. I look forward to playing a constructive role in helping the University at Albany SUNY realize these necessary but eminently achievable goals.
