John Bonafide is the recently retired Director of the Technical Preservation Services Bureau at the NY State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) where he managed one of the nation’s busiest historic preservation environmental review programs. During his 30-plus years at the SHPO, he helped develop some of New York’s key historic preservation protection programs. These included environmental regulations for industrial-scale wind and solar projects, natural disaster management, and NYS Environmental Review actions (SEQR). He directed the development of one of the nation’s first SHPO websites and later directed the expansion of this program into the State’s Cultural Resources Information System, which became the model for SHPOs across the country. John has authored, co-authored, or edited more than 500 research documents for properties and Historic Districts now listed in the National Register of Historic Places. He also served as NYS Parks’ Historic Preservation Officer for more than a decade.
