Albany,
the capital of New York State, is one of the most
important modestly sized cities in the United States. Since
the European colonization of North America, it has
played an important role in government, politics,
culture, commerce, labor, and education. Here, you
will find a comprehensive introduction to its history
from the colonial era to the present. There are
articles on just about every aspect of Albany's
history, as well as a digital library of maps, audio,
and visual resources pertaining to the city's past.
Each entry is accompanied by a short bibliography
for further reading and research. We welcome your
comments and contributions to this on-line and "living"
encyclopedia that will grow as the city grows. We
hope you will find it a valuable resource.
Although
the Department of History at the University at Albany
has taken the lead in initiating, managing, and
hosting this project, many people have contributed
to the production of The Encyclopedia of Albany
History: authors, programmers, photographers,
graphic artists, mapmakers. We are happy to acknowledge
their assistance. All are listed under the "credits"
menu item above.
