.We anticipate that the initial phase of editing The Encyclopedia of Albany History will take approximately 3-4 years. When completed, it will have around 4000-5000 entries. The number of entries will increase with time, as this is a "living" encyclopedia that will be constantly updated, revised, and augmented. To get a sense of the logic and navigation of the Encyclopedia, go to "S" and select "Johannes Schuyler."

We are now soliciting authors. If you are interested in contributing to the Encyclopedia of Albany History, please contact us below.

Albany, the capital of New York State, is one of the most important modestly sized cities in the United States. Since the European colonization of North America, it has played an important role in government, politics, culture, commerce, labor, and education. Here, you will find a comprehensive introduction to its history from the colonial era to the present. There are articles on just about every aspect of Albany's history, as well as a digital library of maps, audio, and visual resources pertaining to the city's past. Each entry is accompanied by a short bibliography for further reading and research. We welcome your comments and contributions to this on-line and "living" encyclopedia that will grow as the city grows. We hope you will find it a valuable resource.

Although the Department of History at the University at Albany has taken the lead in initiating, managing, and hosting this project, many people have contributed to the production of The Encyclopedia of Albany History: authors, programmers, photographers, graphic artists, mapmakers. We are happy to acknowledge their assistance. All are listed under the "credits" menu item above.

This is a multi-media encyclopedia. To enjoy all of its audio and visual elements, you will need to obtain the most recent version of the RealMedia (or RealOne) player. You may obtain a free version by going to the real.com Web site and selecting the "free download" option.
