DEPARTMENT OF CLASSICS

The Department of Classics offers a program leading to the Master of Arts degree with specializations in classical archaeology or Latin.

Program Leading to the Master of Arts Degree

Specialization in Classical Archaeology (30 credits, minimum)

  1. Classical archaeology (16-24 credits). Courses as advised, including either one seminar or Cla 699 (thesis). Up to 8 credits in anthropology may be substituted for work in classical archaeology.
  2. Cla 501 (3), Clc 502(3).
  3. Supporting courses (0-8 credits). Appropriate courses in Greek, Latin, anthropology, or other academic fields with the consent of the advisor.
  4. Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination in classical archaeology.
  5. Modern foreign language requirement. A reading knowledge of French, German, or another modern foreign language is desired for entrance to the program and must be demonstrated before its completion. Some universities require a reading knowledge of Greek and Latin for the Ph.D. in classical archaeology. For further information, consult the departmental advisor.

Specialization in Latin (30 credits, minimum), General Sequence

  1. Latin (16-24 credits). Courses as advised, including either one seminar or Cll 699 (thesis).
  2. Clc 501(3), Clc 502(3).
  3. Supporting courses (0-8 credits). Courses in other literatures, in classical archaeology, or in other academic fields with the consent of the advisor.
  4. Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination in the history of Latin literature.
  5. Foreign language requirement. A reading knowledge of French, German, or another appropriate modern foreign language is desired for entrance to the program and must be demonstrated before its completion.

Secondary-School Teaching Sequence, Latin*

  1. Latin (18-24 credits). Courses as advised, including either one seminar or Cll 699 (thesis).
  2. Education (6 credits): E Phl 601 and three additional credits as advised.
  3. Supporting courses (0-6 credits). Courses in the department or in other academic fields with the consent of the advisor.
  4. Satisfactory completion of a comprehensive examination in the history of Latin literature.

*Prerequisite preparation: Eligibility for provisional certification is required for admission to this program. Completion of this program will meet the academic requirement for permanent certification.

The Department of Classics requires all graduate students, as part of the requirements of the M.A. program, to engage in supervised teaching or research, or to perform other professional duties for the department.

Combined B.A.-M.A. Program

Qualified undergraduates may apply for admission to the M.A. program and, if accepted, simultaneously work toward completion of the requirements for both undergraduate and graduate degrees. See Combined Baccalaureate- Master's Degree Programs for details.
